How does a harddrive just blow 4/13/2006

I recently had to bring my computer in to get work done, because it would not start up. The person at CompUSA told me that my harddrive had blown. When I asked how, he said that sometimes these things just happen. Is this true? Is there anything I could have done wrong? I guess maybe looking back I should have had my system insured. Oh well, I guess I just thought that harddrives should last more than a year! more
