Missoula has the good fortune of having six Gastroenterologists practicing locally. Gastroenterologists are physicians who are highly trained specialists with extensive knowledge and expertise in endoscopic procedures and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver.. Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is the examination of the large bowel using a flexible endoscope. The colonoscopy is considered the "gold standard" for screening for colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, with approximately 150,000 new cases diagnosed annually. This examination allows for the detection and removal of polyps or precancerous growths before they become cancerous and thus is an extremely valuable tool in the prevention of colon cancer. The colonoscopy is also used to evaluate symptoms such bleeding and chronic diarrhea.
Upper Endoscopy (EGD or Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
An upper endoscopy is the examination of the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine. The purpose of this exam is to evaluate symptoms such as persistent heartburn, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, bleeding or swallowing problems. This examination allows the physician to visualize this part of the gastrointestinal tract and detect ulcers, tumors, inflammation or other abnormalities. It also allows the physician to obtain tissue samples and treat strictures or bleeding sites.
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
An ERCP is an examination of the bile ducts (which drain the liver) and/or the pancreatic ducts (which drain the pancreas). The purpose of this procedure is to evaluate and treat certain symptoms and abnormalities of these structures. During this exam, which is done in combination with x-ray and a specialized endoscope, the physician can diagnose and remove obstructing stones, obtain tissue samples, place drainage devices and perform other therapeutic interventions.
Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Tube Placement (PEG)
This procedure allows the physician to place a flexible feeding tube through the wall of the stomach so that patients can receive liquid nutrition through this, and is usually placed if a person is unable to take adequate nutrition by mouth due to some medical condition.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
A flexible sigmoidoscopy is technically similar to a colonoscopy, but examines only about one third of the colon or large intestine.
