I recently took my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee in for an estimate due to a leak in the power steering. They said that the estimate would cost $86.00. I left it there for close to 2 days and when I returned they said they did a, I believe it was a 30 point check, and the estimate for repairs came in at $2,975.72. Needless to say I was in shock as I only have a little over 53,000 miles on the car. The estimate didn't include the passenger side heater, which was another $700.00 dollars making it a total of $3,675.72. I politely told them I really wanted another estimate from someone else as I'm not that smart when it comes to auto repairs. They understood. On the advice of two other people I took my car to another local mechanic. I told him all the things I wanted checked out based on the last estimate. I left the car at his shop over the weekend, he checked it out and said there was nothing wrong other than I needed a new power steering pump, a bulb in the rear tail light and parts to fix the heater. Total was $800.00. Obviously I left it with this mechanic to be repaired. I should also mention that the charge for the estimate was $136.00. I told them no, that they said the estimate would be $86.00. They changed it back to this amount and I walked out.
