Cheap and Filling Meal 7/6/2006

I'm a bit of an Italian food snob, and being from the North I can be quite harsh on what I consider to be "red sauce" establishments. This is one of those. You will not find usual pasta shapes or vegetable laden dishes or anything creative or unusual. What you will find are huge portions of a lot of your favorites, and you'll have leftovers for the following day. They have spaghetti and meatballs, eggplant parm, lasagna, all the old standbyes. The stuff is a bit greasy, but it's tasty for sure. The ambiance isn't much, but it's charming in its own way. They have giant portions available, so it's probably good for a meal to feed many, like if you're having company. more

Dinner and a Show 5/21/2006

A few doors down from the West Newton Cinema is Comella's. This might be the place that the Tramp took Lady for a plate of spaghetti. There are a a few tables tucked into this storefront, and somehow it's romantic rather than makeshift. There is a chalkboard menu listing the idiosyncratically named pasta combinations, so you might have to ask for translation from the staff. Delicious Mess 3/10/2006

Comella's is a hidden gem in West Newton as far as restaurants that serve Italian cuisine go. They serve excellent food with great service. They are best known for their dishes called "mess", which combine pasta, cheese, sauce, eggplant, meat and other secret ingredients. They are so delicious, but the owner will never give away the recipe. This keeps the patrons always coming back for more. The mess comes in all sizes, from small serving portions to half buckets. This is a fun dining experience! more
