What is CNG
CNG is compressed natural gas. Natural gas is over 90% methane, the cleanest burning hydrocarbon available. It is the plentiful, low-cost, domestically produced fuel that is used in more than 70,000,000 homes and businesses throughout the US and as a transportation fuel for motor vehicles. For transportation use the natural gas is compressed to 3000 or 3600 pounds per square inch to increase the amount that can be stored and carried in a vehicle.
CNG is a desirable substitute for our common fossil fuels (gasoline/petrol, diesel, and propane/LPG). Although CNG combustion produces some greenhouse gases, it is environmentally cleaner than other fuels. It is non-toxic, and burning it does not increase the concentration of carbon in the atmosphere. In the event of a fuel release it has no potential for ground or water contamination because it dissipates so rapidly into the air.
CNG is a very plentiful resource. Across North America there are abundant reserves of natural gas and vast new reservoirs are being discovered. In the past five years, shale reservoirs have revealed natural gas deposits that doubled the previous estimated U.S. gasoline reserves ? giving us more than a 1?year supply. Also the supply is growing as new technology allows us to produce from large reserves that were too difficult to access until recently. Natural gas is vital because many experts agree that global oil production has peaked, even as demand is still rising. Because of its growing abundance, domestic natural gas will play a major role in meeting our 21st-century energy needs.
Types of CNG Vehicles
There are three types of CNG vehicles:
Dedicated:
* These vehicles or conversions run solely on CNG. Many of these were manufactured in the factory for government fleets and have made their way to the public through the used car market. The Honda Civic GX Natural gas Vehicle has been and currently is available for sale to the public. New dedicated vehicles cost about $10-15,000 more than a similar gasoline vehicle.
Bi-fuel:
* These vehicles have the ability to run on either gasoline or CNG. Some older models of the Chevy Cavalier and newer models of the Silverado were manufactured as bi-fuel vehicles costing $10-15,000 more. CNG Services:
* Dual-Fuel Installations
* Certified Inspections
* Tank Replacements
* CNG System Services
* CNG System Repairs
* Fuel Maintenance
