Lackluster brunch 8/23/2008

I stopped by this pleasant neighborhood joint for weekend brunch. I ordered the Bruschetta Uovo breakfast. I expected a zippy bruschetta-like send up of eggs for $8.95. What I received was stingily small and entirely bland. Thedish was a slice of fresh mozzarella sandwiched between two slabs of precooked eggs. No basil. No tomato... or almost no tomato, there were a couple of shreds hidden in one end. This was accompanied by dry spinach leaves and two thin slices of deep fried(!) bread. The bread had the most taste of anything on the plate which is not saying much. There may be other dishes here that reward your hunger but I will leave it to others to find them. I will not be back. You will find me at the many better places for brunch in the local area. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Tasteless food more

Impressed! 6/9/2008

Impressed altogether with this place! As a kid I watched this place turn over a few times (and even lay vacant), so I'm glad to see a dedicated business in place. Went here on the recommendation of my mother, who said good things about the place, the food, and the owner. I ordered a grilled sandwich, salad, and dessert, and was very pleased with all three. The only thing disappointing was that my sandwich was lacking tomatoes, which had been advertised on the menu and was a selling point for me. Despite this, the sandwich had good flavor--they are obviously using higher-quality bread and cheese. The Caeser salad was also wonderful, I think mainly because of the dressing, because I didn't care much for the croutons. Lastly, I don't know if they outsource their bakery goods or not, but their 7-layer bar was extremely impressive--think A-Baker's-Wife-quality richness. Pros: Fast, great food, interesting location Cons: Not much! more

Lovely little neighborhood cafe 8/24/2007

Along with the Birchwood Cafe down the street, Clicquot Club provides a mini-burgeoning of quality, handmade food in the Seward/Longfellow neighborhood. Clicquot Club Cafe provides great sandwiches (especially panini) and egg dishes, among other offerings. They have indoor seating, but also some tables outside on the fairly quiet 25th Street. Service is friendly and reasonably fast. I would recommend this for breakfast and lunch. Pros: Great neighborhood feel Cons: None, really more

  • In Short
Located just a hop, skip and jump from the Birchwood Café in the historic "Orange Crush" building, this corner eatery could be the famous Seward restaurant's second cousin. While both spots offer fair-trade coffee and healthy organic fare, the menu at Clicquot is large yet simple: They serve fresh-pressed paninis, Napoli style pizzas and hearty sandwiches, as well as delicious daily soups. Patrons order at the counter, creating quick breakfast and lunch service, and the cozy environment and copious outdoor seating makes it feel like a sweet Seward gathering place all the way.

Hits:The breakfast Panini -- loaded with spinach, baked eggs and everything between -- are must-haves.

    Misses:
The service is often slow and unattentive.
