We went here years ago when things were getting out of hand. My husband was ill and had to have a serious surgical procedure and was unable to work. I was not making enough money to support us all since I needed to be home for my husband and kids and could only work part time. We had two small kids then and a load of bills.
Hoping for help, we brought everything requested and talked to a counselor who told us we didn't have enough income be helped. She figured out a monthly schedule of what we would need to pay to cover the bills and we didn't make that.
With that, we were dismissed and left to our own devices. They suggested bankruptcy but the lawyer said we were not in debt enough to file.
Left on our own, we worked out deals with our creditors and got by until my husband was strong enough to resume work and I got a much better job.
We avoided bankruptcy and paid all our bills in full. But Consumer Credit Counseling didn't help us a bit.
