When we go traveling we try to pick stops that provide:
1) Upscale comfort, and cleanliness,
2) scenic views or other factors that will inspire us,
3) welcoming, helpful, cheerful staff and
4) an overwhelming sense that the operators care about and have pride in their property.
On this trip we stayed in six properties, all highly rated. Three were
return visits and three were new to us.
The highest rated property was a return visit and we were looking
forward to it. Sadly, the renowned owners
appeared to have severely cut their maintenance budget. Complimentary
wine tasting just doesn't
make up for equipment that doesn't work and obviously hasn't for some time.
Another B&B, new to us and highly rated had a king bed that sagged so
badly you felt you were going to roll out of bed.
Our big and very positive surprise came somewhat by accident. We wanted
to break our trip home in to three to four hour driving
segments and preferably stops in previously unvisited areas. Clear Lake
met these goals and we found some positive
traveler recommendations for Clear Lake B&B.
Our reservation was handled by Gregg Gill who seemed sincerely
interested in making us welcome. A plus right at the start.
When we arrived, we were further impressed by the fresh paint, and
obvious owner pride even before we met the Gills.
Check in was instantaneous and Gregg gave us a tour and explanations on
equipment, and breakfast options (about 20!).
Our very welcoming room had one long glass wall fronting on the lake and
hills beyond. The day was exceptionally warm due
to a heat wave over northern California but the room air conditioning
was more than adequate to the task. The floors are
carpeted in an immaculate white pile...not the sort of floor covering
you see in hotels. We have no idea if they did this on purpose
so that we would be careful not to stain it but it does just that and
feels great on the feet too.
Gregg designed and built their B&B seven years earlier yet it looked
brand new. B&B bathrooms are often marginal or
afterthoughts with poorly placed fixtures and inadequate lighting. Not
here though. Like the rest of the building, thought and pride
were behind all the decisions. The location is quiet and well away from
traffic. Parking is convenient.
In the morning, a call to Gregg brought a specially prepared breakfast
we enjoyed on the deck while watching birds and fishermen
testing their skills.
As we prepared to depart, we had a nice chat with both Gregg and Diane
who by this time were old friends in our minds. We were impressed
by the care they have used in both creating this jewel and the warmth of
their hospitality. We'll be back!
