Baked goods to die for 3/11/2009

City bakery has a very metropolitan feel. It reminds me of corner bakeries in NYC, SF or Portland. The small octagonal white tile floor and the little booths attached to the walls add a great ambiance. But the real stars are the muffins. I consider myself an aficionado and these baked goods exceed my expectations. From light and airy blueberry to dense and moist bran you will not be disappointing. The larger breakfast menu is wonderful as well. Pros: Collection of superb muffins of all shapes and sizes Cons: Too far away for me to walk from my house more

A hidden little gem 3/2/2009

I met up with a friend at this cute little place in the middle of the open shopping center, making it hard to find but definitely good and cute. It almost felt like a mini farmer's market concept going on. We each got a sandwich, me the chicken parm and him the catfish. The parm was awesome, open-faced goodness. The catfish was fine too, not at all fishy, but not especially to my tastes. The side was cole slaw, which is either htt or miss -- and in this case a htt Great place if the weather is good. Pros: Quaint Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Disappointing 1/21/2008

While offering a farily large assortment of heatlhy (and not so healthy) cuisine, overall, The City Bakery's service and food are worth far less than the price requests. Expect to pay at least $10 for a tiny sandwich that will leave you hungrier than you were coming in. In general, the food is so-so and grossly overpriced. The pastries on the other hand are OK but expect to pay at least $3 per item. To top it all off, I waited in line along with at least 3 other customers while there were 5 employees behind the counter completely oblivious to the fact that we were standing there. Pros: Pastries Cons: Salad Bar, Prices & Service more

A Caterer Trying to be a Restauranteur 11/1/2006

I wanted to go ahead and check out The City Bakery because I had heard so many interesting things about it. Located in Brentwood, The City Bakery presents itself much like a cafeteria/market, with an accompanying by-the-pound-buffet and mini grocery station where one can buy such sundries as organic milk, yoghurt, and baby food. The food on the buffet does not surpass as being highly inventive, moreso on the " office catered lunch-staples" side (mac n' cheese, mixed greens, garlic toast, tofu squares), but indeed it's fresh and tasty. The pastries are limited, and the one Item that reigns supreme is their world-famous "pretzel-croissant" (a hail back to several similiar European-style breads), a combination of a pretzel and a croissant. I would recommend this spot if you want a reliable, if not overly foodie or gourmet eating experience. Pros: location, pretzelcroissant, parking Cons: lack of inventiveness in pastries and buffet assortment more
