This review is long overdue, as I always had large amounts of anxiety choosing where to go get for my haircut. I am the type of person who loves their hair, mainly because I feel like it's one of the few ways you can express yourself without going any further than a pair of scissors! I've chosen to regular Chop Shop on Main Street due to one reason, Ashley Kennedy! For about a year now, a haircut is something I no longer worry about. She's truly the best thing since slice bread, I cannot imagine going to anyone else for my hair ever AGAIN! I can go a solid month or two without having to go now because there's no spots that were missed and everything is always SO PERFECT. Let's also mention that I went to more expensive salons, and none compared to Chop Shop/Ashley! She rocks, without a doubt! If you're a guy (OR GIRL) and you like great hair, go see her! more

I love this place. I'm allergic to hair dye and Johnny does an amazing job. He is patient and takes his time so none of the die gets on my skin. I have never had any problems and my hair turns out beautiful! more

I've always been selective and apprehensive about who will cut my hair. In fact, once I find a person who does it right, I stick with that person for years. My previous two barbers cut my hair for four years and seven years, respectively. That being said, I'm writing this review to praise the outstanding work and talent of Johnny Valentine who styles and cuts hair at The Chop Shop In Manayunk. I've been a loyal customer of The Chop Shop In Manayunk for the better part of four years now and Johnny Valentine is the person you want when you walk in the door. Although all of the stylists are friendly and welcoming, Johnny's attention to detail is unsurpassed. He will take his time to ensure that you leave his chair completely satisfied. Don't be afraid to say what you want and he will deliver. Ashley did my hair for the first time about two weeks ago and I never loved a haircut and color so much. She knew exactly what I wanted which was a relief for me. She gave me the prettiest highlights and gave me a haircut that made me look so much more professional and pretty! \r \r Definitely check Ashley out. I've only been going to the Chop Shop in Manayunk since January, as I've been bouncing around from hair salon to hair salon since I moved to Philly a bunch of years ago. I got my hair cut and had partial highlights put in by Ashley, and she completely transformed my hair. I've never gotten so many compliments! Aside from just being easy to talk to, she seems extremely knowledgable about hairstyles and what would look best on what face. Plus, while some of the other stylists I've seen ask you the same questions about work and your home life, she actually engages you in conversation and seems to care about what you say. The past few times I've gone I've asked for her specifically as I know she'll do a great job and I won't have to sit quietly for an afternoon. I've never had to wait longer than 15 minutes to see her, but even if I did, she'd be worth it. If you're going, ask for Ashley! more

Like most girls, I don't let my hair do it's own thing. If I did, it would be a wavy, curly monstrosity. I spend hours blow-drying and hot-ironing each week to make my hair as straight as possible. But of course, it's never straight enough. Enter Keratin. I had a coupon for a Keratin express treatment at another salon, however, after seeing results from a full-on four-hour treatment on a coworker, I was sold. I had to get a full-on Keratin treatment with Johnny Valentine. I gave him a call and got an appointment. It took four hours - starting with putting the chemicals on my dry hair, then washing it off, a flat-iron to seal it in, a conditioning treatment, a blow dry and another flat iron treatment. I am absolutely ecstatic with the results. My hair hangs down like one of those people with naturally straight hair. Apparently, I don't even have to blow it dry, it should stay pretty straight on its own. While I was getting my treatment, Johnny filled my head with knowledge about the do's and don't's of caring for your hair. I learned that I was using a conditioner with wax (yikes) which was weighing down my hair. I'm absolutely going to schedule another appointment with Johnny in the future. Got to keep this straight look going! more

I have finally found the perfect hairstylist. Johnny at the Chop Shop in Manayunk is personable, knowledgeable, and extremely talented. Before I start on Johnny, though, I ‘d like to take a minute to discuss the Chop Shop in general. I usually go to pricey, “fashionable” salons and pay way too much to not be entirely happy with my long, wavy/curly, highlighted hair. The Chop Shop is actually where my husband gets his hair cut, and I went one day completely on a whim, bored with my hair and bothered that my previous hairdresser always trimmed too much off. There’s no need to make an appointment, though I always will to make sure that Johnny is available. All of their services are a la carte, which is great—at my previous salon, I had to pay for a blowout (and a sub-par one at that), even if I didn’t request one. I also want to talk about the “attitude” at the Chop Shop. It’s pretty laidback, which again, is something I wasn’t used to. Everyone is friendly and at ease. Sometimes I go to a salon and feel like I’m back in high school—not dressed well enough and not cool enough for the salon clique. Not at the Chop Shop. You get a feeling that everyone there just cares about doing great hair—nothing more, nothing less. At the Chop Shop, you won’t get a glass of wine and a shoulder massage while your hair processes, but you will get amazing hair at an amazing price. Ok, on to Johnny. My first time at the Chop Shop, I left with the most beautiful highlights I’ve had in six years, and by far the most beautiful highlights I’ve had since moving to Philly. One of the most impressive parts of the experience was the consultation before he got started. He asked so many questions about my “hair history” and what I wanted him to do for me. I really appreciated this because far too often, the stylist asks no questions, and being kind of shy, I rarely speak up about what I want. Johnny is also incredibly knowledgeable and willing to answer questions during the service. Due to his excellent consulting skills and his talent and knowledge, I left that day with exactly what I wanted. AND I left with an appointment for a keratin treatment for two weeks later… While the keratin treatment process was lengthy, it was totally worth it. I honestly don’t hate my curls, but in the summer, they are entirely unmanageable. And Johnny does the keratin treatment at the most awesomely insane price I’ve heard of--$175 for your first one. My hair is completely straight now, so straight that I had Johnny cut some bangs for me, which I never, EVER do in the summer. (Again, he asked tons of questions before cutting the bangs, which is great, because bangs are a very, very personal preference.) There’s no risk here at all—the keratin washes out after several months (3-5), so in the fall, I can have my curls back. And for 175 bucks, I don’t have to waste my summer with flat irons and frizz serums. I have had no breakage whatsoever, and my hair feels better than it did before the treatment. If you’ve been considering this treatment, I recommend that you make an appointment with Johnny. Johnny will entertain you, inform you, and most importantly, he’ll send you away with beautiful hair. more

I highly recommend Johnny Valentine for keratin treatment...he recently changed my hair from unmanagable and disgusting (total pain in the butt summer nightmare hair), to silky, shiny, completely frizz free and beautiful hair in just four short hours. He really did an amazing job, and alongside his skill with hair is his noticeable affinity for awesome customer service. I actually had fun with Johnny over the course of the treatment, and he made sure I was perfectly comfortable and taken care of. I will not be seeking help from anyone other than him for any of my hair care needs. Can't beat the first time price either, so get to the Chop Shop immediately and let Johnny work magic on your mane! more

Johnny had worked on my hair couple of times and since I discovered him and his Keratin treatment I been able to enjoy Frizz free vacations and summer. He is very professional and truly cares about the health of your hair. He does not only do one of the best Keratin treatments but he also advice you on the best products you can use according to your hair type. I trust Johnny, with my very difficult hair and I recommend him to anyone. He is great! I am glad I found him. My frizz nightmares are over. more

Ashley is the only person I have trusted with my hair for seven years now, my hair always comes out exactly how I want it, and she does amazing color. I was a few hours away from home, I decided to cut my own bangs, DISASTER! I cut them so short I looked like a toddler getting ahold of a barbie. She just cut them and shaped my head, as always it looks wonderful! I would never trust anyone else with my hair! EVER! more

it had been about 7 monthes since i saw the inside of a hair-salon,[[ the life of a rock-star is just too hectic, to spend too much time on apperance]]. the hair was getting out of control, though and the chop shop was convienantly located between the house and work in the city... so in i went !!i was warmly greeted by the owner upon entry.. and seated almost immediately by ashly. the atmosphere was up beat and relaxed like the sounds on the sterio.. i was given a drink.. [[orange juice]].. and fawned over as i got highlights and the coolest cut of my life... so refreshing to get a cut and have the stylist approach it like she knows what looks good... and then actually gives you what you want.... .. thanks Ashely.. thanks chop shop... i'll be back..for a touch-up in a month or so !! more

It was that time again... time to visit Johnny Valentine for a cut and Keratin treatment. Can I tell you something? \r \r I look F A B U L O U S! \r \r I have a lot of hair, that over the past few years has taken on a life of its own and had become unmanagable. Enter Jonnny, who has tamed the tresses and made me look 10 years younger. Let me put it this way, I got carded the other day. \r \r His creative style, amazing color and highlight work, Keratin treatments and knowledge has made him the only person that I will trust with my hair. I used to just have long hair, now I have fabulously beautiful hair. Its so soft and silky after Keratin, and has now become managable to the point that I can style it myself without spending hours. \r \r If you are in need of a new look, some highlights for a pick-me-up or want to have your hair life transformed with Keratin go to see Johnny Valentine! so i decided to go out and buy one of those do it yourself high lighting kit...end result: zebra on sterriods....so i heard that ashley can fix anything so i decided to call her to see what she said. so i called her and she told me that she could just blend my zebra highlights with different shades of color so it didnt look as bad. so i agreed to try it out, she put some high lights and some low lights in and it was AMAZING!! i look awesome now thanks to her!!\r so if you ever mess your hair up or just need an awesome job done on your hair call her before you go anywhere else!!! more

Ashley did a fantastic job after I called her in tears because of a bad haircut I had today at another salon. She turned my too-short shapeless cut into a cute one that actually made my hair look longer! The price was extremely reasonable and I will definitely be going back! more

I'm extremely picky when it comes to who cuts my hair and until Ashley Kennedy started cutting my hair a couple years ago, I hadnt gone to the same barber/stylist more than once. I can sit in her chair, go over what i want with her, and then close my eyes and enjoy the time to relax without worrying that I'll wind up with some lame buzzcut because of a mistake. I had previously read great reviews for Chop Shop in Manayunk when deciding where to get my hair highlighted. So I decided to trust those who had raved about their experience and check it out myself. I made an appointment with Johnny Valentine, to whom all the reviews suggested to go to for color, especially for blonde highlights, and I was not let down. RIght from the get go Johnny made me feel very comfortable, listening to what I envisioned my hair to look like as well as what I did not want. He was very personable, wonderful to chat with and very professional. I was very pleased with my highlights and with the overall experience. If you're looking for highlights Johnny is your guy :) more

As you can tell from the headline, I really like this place. One of the stylists, Nadine, has been cutting my hair for over 6 years, and I've followed from each salon she previously worked at. She is so friendly and personable and a joy to talk to, on top of being the best (and most consistent) haircut I've ever found! I would recommend her to ANYONE, but I've got a bad feeling that my wait is going to be longer from now on since I'm posting this review. But honestly, the woman takes her time and has never botched a haircut. As a younger guy, I get my haircut roughly every 3 weeks, so 14 times a year over 6+ years, well....you can do the math. Just please don't go when I do LOL more

Being a young guy from Europe, I am always used to the most stylish and trendy haircuts. I've had the same hairstylist before coming to the US for over 5 years, when I started changing them here almost every haircut. After a LONG search, I finally found Johnny! He is someone who could live up to my standards that I was used to living abroad. Not only does he have the knowledge and ability to work with his hands like the best stylists in Europe, he keeps up with new ways of cutting hair that are being taught in the trendy salons of Berlin, Paris, Milan, and New York. While the atmosphere in the salon is relaxed and inviting, Johnny's professionalism is expressed from the moment he greets you, and does not end until you walk out the door. Overall, I highly recommend this salon, and especially Johnny, where you can get the highest bang for your buck, no matter whether you're a female or male!!!! He will make you happy and never let you leave unsatisfied!!!! more
