Best

Very nice, relaxed atmosphere. Food was a little pricey, but well worth it. Our server, Lisa, was exceptional nd on top of everything, from the menu to our wine need. She made our...

Worst

I've been going to this place for special occasions over the past couple of decades and have always been totally pleased with the food and service. I'd not been for several years...

Great for sharing 6/12/2005

Went in on a Monday night w/o a reso - hostess was really cool about it. They were still rocking at 9pm. The food was spectacular - server seemed to have smoked a bowl before her shift - don't know if she was toked or just wasn't paying attention. Kinda funny. Portions are perfect for muli-course sharing. Again - the food was great. Too proud of their wine list - although they did have some really great ones. Pros: great food, cool hostess Cons: expensive wines more

Excellent Service 11/24/2004

My friend and I went there and we were the youngest people in the restaurant. The service was excellent and the food was good, although it's somewhat expensive. I didn't think the ambience was that good. The wait staff is SUPER nice and friendly--so that made up for everything. Pros: service, not crowded more

On day 5, Wolfgang created God 5/12/2004

This guy is amazing. His sauces separate him from the rest of the field. I've enjoyed all of his restaurants. The tempura sashimi, the name only is enough reason to order. The sauce was spicy and creamy and went so well with the dish. The lamb chops were great as was the Shanghai lobster. Just stay away from the foie gras, over cooked. Great place to enjoy with friends. I went there with a group and they also thought it was good. Pros: Sauces, Fun Place more

Chinois 7/6/2003

I hit Chinois every vist to LA, 12 times this year alone. Very noisy, service is so-so, and space is cramped. Food and Bella's wine list bring me back EVERY TIME. The Lobster and lamb are amazing. Pros: Lobster, Fun Cons: Cramped Space, Loud (REAL LOUD), So-So Service more

Very good, but... 2/1/2003

Excellent food, but cramped and noisy. Also after the obligatory hour and a half, the waiters are ready to rip the table cloth out from under you and send you on your way. Pros: very good food Cons: noisy, jammed, pushed out too soon more

Fabulous! 10/1/2002

The other guy doesn't ""get it""...clearly doesn't ""get"" food either. Just came back from LA...Saturday night meal...yes, late, but fabulous! Great LA crowd...everyone looks like they're in a movie or want to be. Service/staff upbeat and attentive. Expensive, but memorable meal and evening...only thing missing...real movie stars! Pros: topnotch food, great people scene, worth the money Cons: expensive, hard to get reservs, parking more

Fine Fusion 9/19/2002

Excellent fusion cuisine. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it's crowded. But the food remains fantastic. Pros: Food Cons: Expensive more

Overrated, overpriced, overexposed 9/4/2002

I just don't get it. What makes this place so special? Granted, the food was great, but it was not a $120 dining experience for my wife and I. We started with the soft shell crab appetizer ($23.50) and then had the grilled salmon and the seabass (about $27.00 each). Add to that a very mediocre glass of merlot ($7.50) and I felt completely ripped off. No tableclothes, cheesy helium ballons tied to each chair (celebrating the restaurant's 19th anniversary) and a moderately informed server only drove home my belief that Chinois on Main is overrated, overpriced and overexposed. Save your money for a dining experience with real ambience. Pros: great food Cons: overpriced, terrible ambience, so-so servers more

still good after all this time.. 8/29/2002

still good, even though capo is nicer atmoshphere..can't believe they are still doing it well more

Try the catfish 7/28/2002

Consistantly great food. The very best ""fusion""cuisine in Southern California. You'll have to shout at the person next to you, and walk sideways to get to your table, but it's all worth it. Pros: Outstanding sauces, innovative menu Cons: noise, noise, noise more

Delicious 6/24/2002

The food at Chinois is delicious. Everthing from basic vegetable fried rice to incredibly prepared lobster in a ginger sause is fantastic. Our group was made up of a horribly finnicky group...some who wouldn't eat meat...some who wouldn't eat fish, and yet the menu had enough variety for everyone. The only real down side to Chinois is that the tables are so close to each other, you will feel like you are sitting as much with your neighbor as you are the others at your own table. Cons: Crowded more
