Watch out for the biting insects (the mosquitoes are a b*tch), but don't miss this place. We went last weekend (July 25 - 28) during the pony swim. The land is marshy, the weather was hot and muggy (lord, the humidity), but still well worth the trip. The beach is absolutely beautiful. The people of Chincoteague are warm and friendly. Even the teeny, tiny, minuscule carnival, held throughout July in celebration of the pony swim, was worth the visit.
We had such a good time, we've already decided to go back next year. If you like less or no commercialism with your beach trip (looking at you, Ocean City, Maryland!), you especially won't want to pass this up.
