The best chili in SOCAL 3/17/2008

From a first timer, former Sooner and much time in Texas, this is the real deal. the staff was charming and welcomed the "newcomer". The chili is awessome. Unfortunately no room or time for pie! Definitely next time. Pros: Real chili Cons: Be prompt it's a small intimate dining experience more

Real Chili & No Fluff 2/27/2008

Some reviewers just don't seem to get it. Do you have any idea how old this place is, or its history? Their own oyster crackers are said to have inspired Nabisco to market them. The logo copyright is older than... The Burbank location is the oldest restaurant in the town. Only a lightweight or novice would compare Tommy's or any good hot dog sauce to real chili. Yes, CJ's has hot dogs and the right sauce for those too, but it's really about the politically incorrect and oh-so-real chili here. Jumbo Judy and RJ Rev are both right about the menu choices, in fact. And so are Trip Advisor and Chris R about other facts. Chili John makes only one chili, and it's hot. If you want it milder, add some of their fantastic signature pink beans. Still too hot? More beans. And please don't stir them. A little beans, chili oil (and other condiments, if you like) should complement the chili on your spoon, not be whirled into it. Now if they'd just put up a website like the original in Wisconsin, so we can order the grub from out of town. I had the pleasure of getting my regular Chili John's fix for over twenty years while in LA throughout the 80s and 90s, and it will never be enough. --Pirate Paul more

Open for business? When? 2/15/2008

Have lived in Burbank most of my life. Have driven by Chili John's many many times. It's a wonder how this restaurant stays in business. Most of the time I go by, it's closed contrary to the posted hours. Not to mention all the many times there is a large white sign on an easel inside the glass front door that reads ""GONE FISHING"". I agree with one of the other reviews about the few customers that are inside when they are open. Even though I've heard poor reviews about this place from friends and aquaintances that have eaten here, I would some day like to try their chili, then maybe I can give this place a better rating. Maybe the next time I go by there sporting an appetite, and they're open, I'll check it out. more

Super-fattening indulgence with so-so service. 8/9/2006

Chili John's is a place you go to when you want to go all out with a chili feast -- it is fatty, salty, ladeled on top of a carb-loaded pile of spahgetti and topped with cheddar and more (optional). It is very, very good and the pies are absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, one more than one occassion I have been irritated by the loud-mouth people who work behind the counter and act like you've stepped into their social hour to eat. They are not very funny and discuss private business matters and gripes in front of customers -- which I consider highly obnoxious. It has caused me not to go back. But, you can get the chili to go which I recommend. Pros: Good chili, fabulous pies Cons: Obnoxious staff more

CHILI JOHN'S LEAVES ME CHILLY 3/21/2006

I'VE BEEN THERE TWICE...AND I'M KICKING MYSELF FOR TRIP #2. THE CHILI I ORDERED WAS DEFINITELY FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER--DRIED OUT AND TASTELESS. AS A BURBANK RESIDENT FOR BETTER THAN 12 YEARS, I HAVE OFTEN MARVLED HOW THIS JOINT STAYS OPEN--I'VE NEVER SEEN MORE THAN ONE OR TWO PEOPLE THERE, AND IT SEEMS TO BE CLOSED MORE THAN IT'S OPEN. AVOID AT ALL COST! more

I dig this Chili 3/23/2005

There are many different options for your chili here. Levels of spiciness, added ingredients (noodles, sour cream, onions, etc...). Fun diner atmos with little waiting time except during a rush. The staff are friendly and easy pleasers. You can purchase a "Chili Kit" for around $20 and make it at home too. Pros: Tasty, Fun Cons: Not next to my home more

Mel's diner 7/3/2003

Do you ever wish you could have gone to Mel's diner in real life? Well now you can. This place is legit! They have filthy menus, stained shirts on the wait staff, there are no tables, and nothing here is healthy...and it's perfect! They only have 1 kind of chili. Don't let them tell you any different. You can order beef, chicken, or vegi, and hot, medium, or mild...but it's all the same stuff! But it doesn't matter because it's the best chili ever. Top it off with some lemon pie and a tall coke, and you'll feel satisfied all day...although your office mates may wish you went straight home. Oh, and ONLY FOR LUNCH. They close early. more

Choices, Choices 5/12/2003

There truly are choices at Chili John's. Do you prefer beef, chicken, or vegetarian? Do you prefer it mild, medium, or hot? Do you prefer it over beans, over spaghetti, both, or by itself? Do you like onions, cheese, and/or sour cream? Hot peppers? Fun, small, local atmosphere, with a U-shaped counter of approximately 20 seats, period. I hear the homemade pies (pineapple cream, and lemon) are the best, but I was too full after my chili. more
