Chiang's Gourmet

I like to go on the weekends because they serve soy milk soup. Get the chinese doughnut with it and some side pastries. The appetizer - cold, smoked fish is also very good. I'm not Chinese, but my friends who lived in China until they were out of high school go to Chiang's Gourmet (and the one on Lake City). They say it's pretty authentic. The other thing I love is that their Chinese menu is the same as their English. Unlike Yeas Wok in Newcastle. I can't go to Yea's Wok unless I go with someone who reads Kanji! more

3 of us were there on a Saturday night. We are all chinese and we know good authentic chinese food and this came pretty close. It was however, packed and we waited almost 20 minutes for a table. My wife is Chinese and I have been to China seven times. We always have a hard time finding authentic Chinese food. Last night we went to Chiang's once again. The food was great as usual. The only disappointment was, now that it has become so popular, it was packed!!! (Bad for us, good for them!) We had to wait to be seated for about 15 minutes and about 30 mintues for our food to arrive. Still, it was worth the wait!! I was drawn in by the promise of a vegetarian menu. When we first sat down, we were dismayed by the few vegetarian choices, but then found out that you have to ask for the vegetarian menu. As far as ambience goes, my bench in the booth was cracked and sunken in and not very well glued down. The general decor was also pretty general campy Asian restaurant-like. The menu doesn't include descriptions of the dishes, so I asked the waitress to describe two of them to me, but I'm not sure if she knew much to say or not. Due to a communication problem, she brought me both of the dishes I asked about. As it turned out, the szechuan tofu was too spicy without much flavor, but the vegetable delight and my boyfriend's dish were pretty good.
