To be completely honest, it was not the food that turned me off of this place, but the rude hostesses and servers. I have been here many times before and tried to give it a second...

ONE OF THE BEST HAPPY HOURS IN LA NO CONTEST! 7/22/2007

Chaya is a great place to have a romantic dinner but, perfect for a tasty happy hour...vibrant and classy but, still low key and fun. Friendly service but, be prepared for the rush! The rolls are delicious and the alaskan king crab is extra sweet. If you sit at the sushi bar feel free to request custom rolls the chefs are extremely accomodating...they made several rolls for me that were not on the menu...it's best to get there before the big rush to avoid the wait since it is a popular place for the trendy Venice crowd. Highly reccommend for happy hour if you are looking to spend $ or for dinner if you are looking to spend $$$. I don't think I will ever tire of the Pineapple infusion and litchi martinis... :D Pros: First Class Happy Hour, Friendly trendy crowd, Cool Atmoshpere, Great Sushi or Dates Cons: Get's busy Quick! Pick a smart cocktail waitress! more

Good happy hour 7/18/2007

The sushi during happy hour is a steal and always good. Once it bumps up to full price it isn't as worth it, as better sushi awaits elsewhere. Never tried the full menu. Pros: Great happy hour Cons: Sushi at full price isn't such a great deal. more

Okay food. Trendy hot spot. 6/18/2007

The food is just okay. Nothing amazing. The sea bass was good, the rib eye steak average, and the crispy butterfish okay. The place is loud. Lots of attractive people eat here. It took a long time to get our food. I don't think I will go again. more

Raspberry Mojitos Rock--friendly service 3/5/2007

I had not been to Chaya in a while, but decided to give it a try again after finding the recommendation online from City Search! I didn't have a reservation and didn't get in right away--as expected at any popular restaurant, but I decided to wait in the bar for a table in the restaurant--great mojitos, not too tart. I got seated pretty easily after a small wait and the girls in front were very sweet to us which was refreshing. I ordered a mixed variety of sushi as an appetizer and decided on a vegan item on the menu as an entree. It was really tasty! Lively fun crowd which I needed that night. Parking was reasonable-$3 I believe with validation. I was surprised at 1 reviewers negative comments about people working there because I got a cool vibe--but obviously reviewer was negative about women and feeling a little threatened...hmm. All in all--thumbs up! Pros: good place for drinks--good sushi Cons: find a table in the bar because it' not easy to stand more

Eclectic Menu, Great Service 2/9/2007

We headed here with a group and no reservation, and were still seated in 30 minutes. Our server was very patient with us (being that we already had a few drinks in our systems) and he was quick. He did not mind that we handed 5 credit cards at the end of the meal!! All of us wanted something different (Japanese, Italian, American) and we were all pleased. The calamari was amazing with its curry sauce, nice twist. The room is rather crowded and the acoustics could be a little better. The interiors are also a bit dated, but that doesn't seem to bother anyone because the bar and restaurant were packed! Pros: Service, Unique Fare, Scene Cons: Loud, Crowded, Pricey more

Great Vibe & Drinks 1/22/2007

It's been a while since I've been to Chaya Venice, and I have to say that little has changed - the place is still very crowded, loud and fun (when you are in the mood for that). I've never been particularly excited about the food here, but the drinks and happy hour bites do not disappoint (actually the food gets better after a few cocktails)... service is inconsistent, sometimes quite good, other times snooty and even bordering upon the rude. However, I still recommend this spot simply because it's a great place to hang with your friends (but for a date, the noise level can be quite distracting). There's a lot adjacent to the restaurant with valet but it's not too clear if you've never been here before (they should have better signs). Pros: Fun Drinks/Happy Hour Cons: Inconsistent Service; Loud more

The Hostess Is Evil 1/5/2007

We've been to Chaya 5 or 6 times and just had an experience that will prevent us from ever going again. We checked in early (so unLA) and let the hostess know that we were ready and waiting and at the bar when a table opened up. 45 minutes later we checked in and she blamed us (finger pointing with her fake blonde ringlet hair) and said that we were late and could have been seated earlier. We took her abuse and sat down. Waitor then saw we had drinks already and had no interest in serving us until we were empty despite many requests for service with ""excuse me"". Finally we were served....(get the peppercorn steak). A friend came in, pulled up a chair, and sat with us after the restaurant was mostly quiet....until he hostess, once again, looking to find something better in her life to do...told us we were making the restaurant look ""messy"" by having a seat pulled up. A very nice waitor named Patrick came and apologized to us and made up for much of the damage....but it was a little too little too late. Amanda/Whatmitta....whatever the girl with the sweater that looked like it had been shred by a cat....she was awful and made the establishment look less than professional. I have never written a review, and a big fan of citysearch so I felt I was obligated. Pros: Good location and scene Cons: hostess more

Way overpriced, mediocre food 11/13/2006

I've been here a few times and can honestly say the best part about it are their desserts. I have yet to have a good lunch or dinner here. It's every bad stereotype about LA restaurants: self-important underdressed wannabe crowd mixed with expensive, terrible food. With so many excellent restaurants availble, even nearby, I don't understand this place. It's expensive because it looks expensive. It's trendy because people don't know better. I've even found better places to get creme brulee than this. I won't come back unless a friend is treating that night or something. Pros: seems nice on the surface Cons: overpriced food more

so much fun 11/5/2006

this is a great date place...the food was amazing. This location is much better than the one in Beverly Hills. I had the sea bass and it melts in your mouth more

Very Good all around 9/12/2006

I had the sea bass and it was devine, my friend had the red snapper that was really good as well. The service was good. I cannot wait to go back!! Pros: Cool Setting, casual place Cons: its can get very noisy more

Horrible service, mediocre food!!! 8/27/2006

The service at this place is absolutely awful... not only did we wait 20 minutes for our drinks, but our food took over an hour to get. We had to ask the bus boys to check on our food since our waitress didn't bother to check on our table. I had the miso flavored sea bass, it was okay but not great. The place is overpriced for what it is and it's a bit of a touristy crowd there. For the price, you can go somewhere much nicer with better service. Cons: Service, price more

fun atmosphere, tasty food 7/7/2006

My meal here was pretty impressive: a yummy, big goat cheese salad and then some kind of a Cajun-marinated fish. I thought it was all tasty (but I'm glad I wasn't paying). The desserts, though, where the best part, particularly the banana one. AMAZING. I thought the decor was a little silly (stupid sculptures...) and I was bummed out at how loud the place was, particularly around 9 30, when we were wrapping up. But it was tasty, our waitress was helpful, I love the neighborhood, great for an after dinner stroll. It's a fun restaurant. more

Can't wait to go back to Chaya~ 2/19/2006

Great drinks, great crowd, great atmosphere and most importantly FANTASTIC FOOD! Lobster enchiladas for an appetizer is a great way to start it off! So far I have ordered callops wrapped in new york steak, paella, and salmon, which were all great. I have tried the filet, nothing so rant and rave over. Typical filet. Looking forward to trying other items on the menu. By the way, might want to skip the banana banana banana for dessert, it was dry and nothing special at all about it. Pros: food&drinks, hooks on wall 4 jackt, ambience Cons: parking more

Ok Sushi but mostly a scene 1/18/2006

I went here for the first time for the happy hour sushi on a Monday night. It was very crowded, considering it was a Monday and if you come here with more then 2 people you will be waiting awhile. The sushi happy hour list is very small and consists mainly of the most common sushi rolls most sushi goers are familiar with. Amazingly the happy hour ONLY applies to this small sushi roll selection and not to any other part of the menu including and especially NO drink specials. They have some nice cocktail concoctions but the savings you get on the food will quickly be lost on the drinks. It seemed that Chaya Venice is mainly for people trying to make the scene a more style then substance kind of place. Pros: Ambiance, Service Cons: crowded, pricey more

Best Restaurant in LA! 10/9/2005

Everything about this restaurant is excellent: The food, ambience, service! Certainly the place to go for any special occasion. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service more

not so much 8/25/2005

A first timer and severely under-whelmed. Four minutes late at Chaya and the 5 of us were made to feel like we needed to seek penance. In sharp contrast, a recent visit to another high-visibility, high-end restaurant everyone from the entire bus to waitstaff were happy to see us and glad we stopped in (even without a reservation). Chaya's space itself was very nice and filled-up quickly. I wondered why, because it certainly wasnt the food. The signature fish dish done to death; the sauce though pretty in appearance was tasteless; and they left the garlic out of the garlic-mashed potatoes. Several sushi items did not taste fresh. Perhaps it was an off night, but more likely it is just another LA-place to be seen and not eaten at. Sigh, so many restaurants and now another one I can take off my list. Pros: atmosphere, good wine list Cons: mediocre food, poor value, bad attitudes more

Always great food 6/6/2005

A lot of new places come and go but Chaya Venice is still hot after over 15 years! Pros: Food, service, value more

Not a good happy hour value 4/19/2005

I went for the highly rated happy hour and got very disappointed. First of all, the parking is usually free with validation but $3 flat rate for dinner. They charge happy hour parking for dinner rate. The food was ok, nothing too special, just sushi you could get from any sushi restauant. There are only 3 rolls to choose from for happy hour, which are california rool, spicy tuna roll, and chef's special roll, each has 6 pieces and for $4, so the price is not impressive, just okay. Cheapest drink we could find on happy hour menu was $4.50 for a beer. So it's about the same price at a regular restaurant for drinks and food. Crowd was casual and lots of people came with coworkers it seemed. NOT RECOMMENDED if you are looking for good happy hour. Pros: Food was okay, Decoration was okay Cons: Not a good value, Charge for parking more
