All around tantalizing sensory experience! 10/16/2010

I do not live in Harrisburg but have been to this epicurean delight several times, and I am sure to return. The first time I ventured to this charming bistro like eatery on the corner of a quaint little street, I was on a quest to find a good place to eat in a town I had not been to before. Little did I know I was about to uncover Harrisburg's secret treasure. First I should say I am not the average diner, I enjoy good food and appreciate a diverse and adventurous menu. I walked in the front door, and it being my first time I felt a little uncomfortable opening the drawn curtain and entering into the middle of a quite full dining area. The owner, Char, was quick to greet me and assure me it was fine to come in through that door and even though I was dining alone, and had no reservation, I was able to get seated at a table. The table seating is easily adaptable to any group size as a cushioned bench basically runs the length of each wall and then small tables are put together for large groups or separated for smaller parties. There are a few tables situated in corners away from the bench tables too. My server was very helpful in going over the menu and the specials. While I was waiting for my entree Char came over to my table and sat with me and conversed for a few minutes. She made me feel welcome and comfortable. I learned that the beautiful glasswork that adorned the walls, was her daughter's artwork. I believe the first time I was there I had the chilean sea bass, and it was indeed spectacular. The chef, Ron Canady, came out later in the meal and checked in on most people to see if they enjoyed their meal. I am gluten free and often find myself feeling almost punished by what I can no longer eat. In Ron Canady's hands(the chef) I feel like I have been set out on a wonderful adventure, awakening tastes and pairings that are sheer delight. At first one might be put off by how close the tables are seated to each other, but it really lends itself to people conversing with their neighbors, and inquiring on what tastebud adventure they are embarking on. Diners are generally friendly and by the end of the night I have usually made friends with everyone seated around me. I should also say am usually not a very outspoken person but the atmosphere just lends itself to open communication. I have been back several times and each time is somehow better then the last. Although the first time I had been there it immediately became my favorite restaurant, so how it never falls short and always seems to outdo itself is most satisfying. It was probably my third time there that I ordered the warm chocolate souffle. Suffice to say it is the most pleasurable experience I have ever had. My apologies to Salvatore, the beverage manager, in that I have not yet ventured down the exotic drink or after dinner drink list. I do not believe my senses could handle anymore. I do plan on being back and eventually I will venture to the drink menu. Service has always been excellent and personable. On Wednesdays the setting is completed by a terrific jazz musician. Oh yes, the prices are admittedly high. You get what you pay for. If you can make it there on a Thursday or Sunday they have a special which consists of choice of soup du jour or salad pick of 1 of 3 entrees and pick of 1 of three desserts for $34, which is an excellent value. If you truly enjoy an excellent dining experience, this is it! I do recommend making a reservation. I was lucky my first time, but always call ahead now so that I am assured a seat. more

Poor service- bad attitude, just plain full of itself! 11/23/2006

A quiet evening with only a few tables should have been an easy night at a nice restauarnt ... you think?\r Good service on our appetizers and then 40 + minutes of waiting while our waiter ignored us ... stuck, wondering - - food?\r Then the incorrect meals were delivered and when questioned greeted with a poor attitude - good gosh, why would we pesky customers question such a fine dining institution ...\r \r Anyway - full bill arrived for poor service, bad attitude and NO apology from the surly and terse waiter ...\r I can at least say I have a story to tell, over and over to everyone I know about where NOT to go for dinner when you are seeking good food and a pleasant dining experience. Pros: lovely interior Cons: poor service, bad attitude more

Not sure why you call them French. 4/26/2005

Consistently good food and service. Tapas bar (Spanish) and Mediterranean menu. As long as the river doesn't flood, you'll have a great meal and wonderful time. Pros: Nightly Specials, Good Kitchen, Attractive Decor Cons: Floods w/ River does more
