Sorry to See A Good Store Go Bad 9/9/2013

Chalmer's Hardware was excellent years ago in terms of service and inventory. Now they have little of either. Be sure you know what you want and how it works because the staff knows nothing about their stock. And are seemingly unconcerned about learning from do-it yourself pros. I came here for years but lately the service has become so poor that I can no longer support this local island business. more

Great to have in the neighborhood 1/12/2011

Okay, so drive onto the mainland or to the west end to save 30 cents on your purchase. Chalmer's is incredibly well stocked for the size of the store, especially with the stuff you'll need for your old island home. The staff are Galvestonians, so they'll be knowledgable, and when was the last time someone in the big box store was really helpful (if you get one to talk to you)? more

OK if you're in a hurry - but don't expect much 8/15/2005

Chalmer's is a very small old-fashioned neighboorhood hardware store. They don't have a very big stock, and their prices are higher than many of the other stores in town. You'd think that with these factors, they'd try to make up for their comptetive disadvantages by emphasizing service and customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, this is often not the case. Sometimes the staff is helpful, sometimes they ignore, sometimes they are rude. Bottom line: Since I live in the neighborhood, I'll go in there for a very quick trip to buy something I absolultely know they'll have, if only to save a longer trip to the other side of town. Otherwise, I'll head off to Pret's, Home Depot, or even Lowe's on the Mainland. more
