Best

I must say that my Sister and I were impressed by ""El Chalan"" delicious home made peruvian food. They should keep the same CHEF and they should renovate the restaurant. I will...

Worst

The worst Peruvian food in Miami. Too bad, because the location is so good. There are so many other good ones, e.g. Sabor Peruana, El Tayta, Salmon Salmon. more

Granted I staggered in here at the recommendation of the tattoo shop after sitting 5+ hours for my first tattoo. I was tired, hungry and probably still in shock from the pain!\r Got a very well seasoned, tasty fresh meat and tomato and rice dish in a wonderful gravy. the meat was well seasoned and tender, and I have to say different tasting (very good) than any other latin meat dish I have had before - so uniquely Peruvian! i was just surprised that within that tasty stew of onions meat and tomatoes was a bunch of french fries?! Haha for sure not what I was expecting!\r Will come back (because I have more tattoo to complete) to try the stewed chicken dish that they were sold out of (Always a good sign)\r 3.95 of 5 stars more

We have been enjoying Chalan for several years. The atmosphere is causal and the food quite well prepared. On our last visit we had an exceptional waitress, Gloria. Her attention to detail added to the pleasure of the evening. Portions are ample. Prices reasonable. more

We were visiting from Philadelphia and on business and we wanted avoid the typical big city steak-house/ formula restaurant and what-not dining experiences. Along comes CHALAN on the Beach. Recommended by the hotel staff, Peruvian food is not a cuisine we're familiar with but boy does this place deliver! So much so that we ate here twice in three days. The ceviche de pescado is really outstanding only a to be challenged by the ceviche mixto (fish, shrimp and calamari). It is fresh, citrusy and just spicy enough to make you want to have another piece of ceviche just to cool your tongue. Grilled mixed seafood is another winner as well as the spicy shrimp dish. Don't forget the aji spicy green sauce mixture of lime juice, habanero and jalopeno (where are my Spanish alphabet diacritical letters?) This is a place where mostly the locals eat (i.e the Peruvians living in Miami, which apparently are plentiful). Anyway, the ambiance is only a little more than diner meets cafe but the staff are friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. Here's the best part; it's so reasonable it borders on cheap. We can't say enough about the place except that the next time we're in Miami Beach we're here for at least two more dinners. Wow! more

Its not a fancy or beautiful restaurant on the beach, but i must say that the food is really good. The arroz con mariscos is delicious, arroz chaufa truly peruvian style, jalea is good too (but in Peru is much better because of the fresher ingredients), ceviche is ok-to good, flan is yummy too. Over all the food is great. This restaurant is more of casual and the service is not all that but the prices are not bad either, if you just wanta eat good then this is the place for peruvian food to go to on the beach. more

This place was a nice surprise. I'm a pilot for continental and I'm forced to eat out everywhere I go. I'm a big fan of Peruvian food and this restaurant did a fine job. It's not a tourist trap so it's not upscale but the prices are a bargain for this location on south Beach. The fish Tripical with the shrimp sauce served over yellow rice was fantastic! more

Quick story, the bread was aged and we requested to change it, the waiter replied saying that everything was like that. I told him to take the bread then as I did not want to eat it. He got another loaf of bread from a bag and my partner was able to see him cutting it and placing it in the oven. Same issue, the bread was age and it would crumble into pieces. We had it as it was warm and we were hungry, shortly after we saw the waiter throwing the same bag of bread into the garbage. The food was salty and my steak was over cooked. The entry was fine though. We have a Peruvian restaurant in Toronto where these people should go to learn about customer service and quality cooking... more

A great deal 3/16/2007

This is a restaurant in South Beach that serves typical Peruvian food. The ambiance is not great...the tables are all crowded together and the restaurant just lacks any style whatsoever. I like it though, it reminds me of the restaurants in Peru, simple and homely. Most of the staff there do not speak English, but the menus are bilingual and the items are numbered so the non-spanish speaker can just indicate what he wants. This is not typical Latino cuisine. Peruvian food also has a type of fusion with Asian cuisine, due to the many Asians that have resettled there. There are different types of noodles and fried rice on the menu. My sis ordered the sauteed noodles with chicken. Very good...slightly different from what Asian Americans prepare although you have the same background of soy sauce, vegetables, and noodles. I ordered Bistic a la Pobre and got a large thin-sliced steak with two fried eggs, white rice, plantains, lettuce and tomatoes, and a side of beans that look to be garbanzo. The steak is not anything high-quality but it is decent and huge. The beans were great. They were slightly seasoned with cilantro...very typical of Peruvian food. This food is for the diner that wants something different and likes to try food of different cultures. It is not for the diner that is looking for ambiance. Pros: great food, great value Cons: poor ambiance, staff does not speak english, noisy more
