Cute homey Thai place 1/21/2010

Went to Chai Yo for the first time the other day. Menu was extensive, prices were reasonable, and they had a note on the bottom saying that they would cater to strict vegetarians, which is very nice, because some places put fish sauce everywhere and won't make substitutions. We were alone in the restaurant, so it was especially weird that there was no music, which made me feel like I shouldn't talk, it also sounded like someone was walking around on the roof, so the place had a bit of a quiet, cold feeling. My boyfriend always gets Pad Thai with tofu, no eggs, and no fish sauce. Sadly, he gave this one the thumbs down and made a comment about how oily it was, and that the tofu prep wasn't his favorite (he even under-ate at the restaurant ad immediately doctored his leftovers with ketchup & soy sauce when we got home). I ordered the Pumpkin Red Curry with Shrimp, which was quite tasty, but next time I'd get tofu or veggie, so I could share with my hubby. They didn't have hot sauce assortments on the tables, so I had to ask, and our server gave me the choice of oil or powder. All in all, pretty good, and if my boyfriend & I go to Chai Yo again, it will be for curry takeout. Pros: curry, clean, fast service, vegetarian friendly Cons: too quiet, no hot sauce platters on table more

chai yo has good food 10/17/2009

this place is right down the street from me. dishes always have plentiful portions. spiciness is catered to the individual's tastes. havent been disappointed by any of the dishes. service is prompt. go early to get good seating. i dont think they are crazy like the person before me says. why would someone order food by fax? thats dumb and antiquated. Pros: good food, takeout is fast and prompt Cons: restaurant is a little on the small side more

good decent place for lunch 1/28/2009

this place is pretty good.. Their pad thai is okay. The people is really nice. I really like their thai iced tea Pros: cleanliness Cons: street parking more

Strange customer service 8/11/2008

We LOOOOVE the food at Chai Yo, but refuse to go there anymore because they are crazy. Like, we witnessed them trapping an unsuspecting parker in their back lot and refusing to let her out for twenty minutes because they thought she shouldn't have parked there to begin with. They threatened to have her towed and the poor lady was so frustrated she said, 'Yes! Tow me! I want out!' Also, we ordered food there once via fax during normal business hours and when we went to pick it up, they had closed. We thought it was strange they didn't call us and let us know they weren't open that day. Pros: Delicious food Cons: Nutty staff more

Best Thai Food in Town 2/14/2008

The service was fabulous, we were served soup within a couple of minutes after ordering by a very friendly server. I have eaten at this restaurant numerous times and it is always wonderful and very authentic food.\r A+++++ more

Great Thai Restaurant! 1/29/2008

Great Thai Restaurant! Can call in order and it is always ready to be picked up when I get there. They even remember the way I like it, sometimes not with tomatoes but with mushrooms, just the way I like it. Everybody is always very friendly and ready to take my order if I dine in. Pros: Very Friendly Cons: Parking on street more

WORST THAI FOOD EVER!!! HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! 10/2/2007

Worst Thai food experience ever. Had to point at what we wanted because the waitresses did not understand. Our table was missing two plates and silverware which we had to get ourselves from another table. Food came out fast and cold and one item came out wrong.\r HORRIBLE I WOULDN'T RECOMEND IT TO ANYONE! Pros: The Water... Cons: Food, Service, Parking and Portions. more

Excellent Service 5/7/2007

Excellent Food, superior attention to detail. 5/1/2007

Oh how I love chai yo. I no longer live nearby and can't go 3x a week like I used to but when I can, it's always worth the drive. This is no sloppy stir fry joint. Everything is well prepared and first rate. Sauces are complex and well reduced, meats are well prepared and fresh. I have never ordered anything I didn't enjoy here, but many things that were exceptional. Speaking of exceptional, I have been consistently impressed with the attentive and pleasant service here. After a few visits the servers even remembered how hot I like my food and what I like to drink. I really love this place. Try the Pad Prik Khing, with chicken-- medium. I think you'll like it! Pros: great food, great service, reasonable prices Cons: parking on NE broadway is a drag sometimes more

Best Green Curry Ever! 2/22/2007

My husband and I went there for lunch. It's a very quiet and cute house. I am a green curry expert as that is the only Thai dish I eat and I this place has the best green curry in town! My husband had the red curry duck and that was just as yummy. Food came out fast and the service was great! Pros: Quick Service more

Delicious, Quality Cuisine and Attentive Service 10/9/2006

I have been to Chai Yo three times now, and plan to make this a favorite dinner spot. The wait staff is polite and attentive, and the food comes out incredibly fast. My last time there, I even asked if they could rush order, since I was seeing a movie in an hour. Our food came out ten minutes later, piping hot and delicious! What makes this so surprising is that the ingredients are obviously very fresh, and not just defrosted and slapped together.\r \r The ambience of this restaurant is unique and fun. There are about ten tables set up in two different rooms of an old house. The creaky wood floors, quiet music, and knick nacks all create a charming atmosphere. I would definitely recommend this place for a date or to catch up with a few friends. The green curry and crab cakes are especially divine. Pros: Quality ingredients, excellent service, interesting atmosphere more

The best place in Portland 3/6/2006

There are few restaurants in life that you will remember and crave for the rest of your days on earth. This is one of those restaurants. I have tried most of the items on the menu and have my favorites but everything is good. And when I say good I mean you will start to eat here at least once a month after you try it. Pros: The food, The service Cons: No delivery more

Best Thai on Broadway 3/23/2005

My wife and I eat out ALOT and we work close to the Broadway strip, so we have eaten at almost all of the Thai resaurants along Broadway. Chai Yo was certainly the best Thai food we've had in a long time. Very nice inside, great service and absolutely wonderful food! more
