What's up with Certainteed?????? 12/2/2011

Good: I liked the windows because they came highly recommended by another source in comparison to the other windows. Installed them, told everybody what a great find I had in the certainteed product.. Bad: Like anything with a warranty, it's great until you need it. You find out you've been abandoned by Certainteed. That great warranty....... it aint there!. Improvements: I'd like to see Certainteed do the right thing and fix this screw up.. Other: I know I'm just one person. I'd love to know how many other people have been ripped off. I WILL exhaust my efforts in making Certainteed uphold their promise to the consumer. I challenge them to do it without being forced to.. more

swiggle spacer, cracked glass 10/27/2009

To the people with cracked windows: I have been installing windows for 25 years. The trouble with Certainteed windows is the swiggle spacer. When heat hits it, the swiggle deforms thereby cracking the glass. This happens mostly on narrow or small windows, especially on the south and/or west sides of a house. Certainteed windows was bought by Metal Industries, who refuses to do anything about the cracked glass or the deformed spacers. Warrenties are not being honored. more

Certainteed Vinyl Replacements 10/8/2009

I moved into me home about 10 years ago (1999). Certainteed Sliders (Vinyl Inserts) had been recently installed by prior home owner but I do not know when. Many window did and still had labels on them with size info and installer or purchaser info. The miters on some of the frames are separating to the point you can see thru them. The seals around the glass is separating at the corners on both the inside an outside portion of the windows. No window leaks but air..yes. The best thing I like about the windows is the locking mechanism (Better than what I have seen on Andersen, Marvin and some others. The windows still slide fairly well and the vinyl still appears to be white. As a am starting to replace with new construction windows I am leaning toward the Marvin Integrity Ultrex or Wood-Ultrex. I do not know if Certainteed has improved over the years but I am not going the find out. more

covington Glass 11/6/2008

We had new windows installed last year with Covington Glass. I removed the windows in front of the house to clean them and one slider bracket broke off. I called the installer from Covington Glass probable 3 or 4 times and left a message about the problem before he called me back. He said he didn't have time to come out and repair the bracket and he just won't do it. I asked him who I should contact to get it repaired and he told me he don't know who will fix it. I'll never use this company again. more

Spots between glass 5/4/2008

Red spots appeared between the panes 3 years after installation of 2 large sliding windows. 3 of the 4 sliders have these spots which are obviously a manufacturing defect. Response from Certainteed: Not covered, suggest you have a local glazing company replace the glass. Local glazer laughed an stated " welded vinyl frames, you need to replace the entire slider units" more

Same problem as Nancy F. 12/10/2006

I just went through the same experience as Nancy F the other week. The CertainTeed Window installed by Northwest Windows & Doors last year in 2005 cracked during the cold weather the week after Thanksgiving in Seattle. Nothing struck the window from either side, but just simply cracked from top right corner diagonally to the bottom left corner... I also believed I had lifetime warranty, but not for cracked window and my warranty doesn't cover it...same excuses given to Nancy F. CertianTeed didn't even bother taking a look or even ask any questions from my claim, but simply took no responsibility and told me get fixed from another outfit on my answering machine... What's up with this warranty and with CertainTeed Windows!? more

Spontaneous Breakage Equals Act of God 10/3/2006

We had some replacement windows installed about three years ago. The installer, Northwest Window and Door Company did a good job and we were happy with the result. Last month the interior glazing of one of the awning windows spontaneously cracked. It was tempered glass and within a few seconds the crack had covered entire pane. At the time, I was standing outside below the window and my husband was sitting inside. Nothing struck the window from either side. I thought, "good thing these windows have a lifetime warranty." However, when we contacted the Certain Teed company that manufactured the windows, they told us that any glass breakage more than six months after installation is considered an Act of God and is therefore excluded by the warranty. This seemed strange to me, since there was no fire, explosion, wind storm, earthquake or any other event that I could associate with the breakage of the glass. It seemed like it had to be a defect in the glass. Since the warranty doesn't define Act of God I'm wondering if this isn't just an easy way for the company to get out of honoring their warranty. more
