I stopped into Ceres about a month ago when I was in Portsmouth on a gorgeous Saturday with bf. We had already eaten lunch so I just nabbed a cookie at the time, even though the options looked delicious. Fast forward to this past weekend. Mom and Pops were in town and they kindly agreed to make the trek up to Portsmouth despite the dreadful weather. We were freezing just walking from the car to Market Sq. We stopped into Ceres and eyed the board listing the day's soups, wanting nothing but a bowl of warm tasty comfort. We got one West African Peanut soup and one Mushroom Barley. Both excellent and totally hit the spot. I'd rank the Peanut slightly higher, if only because it's a tad more unusual and they executed it beautifully. They served us the soups with huge hunks of their ciabatta and sunflower oat bread. The sunflower oat was fantastic. The third part of our lunch was a sandwich: black bean hummus and smoked gouda on the sunflower oat with L, T, and cucumber. Once again, totally exceeded expectations. This was one tasty hummus and it paired beautifully with the gouda. There are a few tables in the main room where the counter is. But hidden just beyond is a second room with significantly more seating and painted a very bright and cheerful red. Everything about the place just warmed us right up. The soups, bread and sandwich were filling, so we passed on the sweets afterward (shocking for me, I know), but everything on the case looked tantalizing. On my list for when I return: their lemon ricotta cookies and their coffee cakes. Mmmm.
Pros: Warm inviting space, stellar food
Cons: Seriously, nothing that I could see
