Centennial Park -- ooops 8/21/2005

Centennial Park is new, and it was a great idea. At the north end of town right on main street, the huge american flag looks good from I-70. I've seen travelers slow down at the flag, get off the highway and pull into the parking lot for a rest or bathroom break. Excellent bathrooms. Like in a church. That clean, heated and nice. Super fun playground, brand new areas. Nice covered eating area. And the rock fountain thing. along with the welcome to Richfield Sign, looks quite nice, made of local stone. Plus, the park is almost always empty, so you've got it mostly to yourself. There appears to be two reasons for that. The first is that there are NO TREES. Which means, if its hot, its really hot. And the brown playground equipment soaks up the sun and burns little legs and hands. No fun at all. They did add a drinking fountain this summer though. Secondly, its sinking. LIke 3 feet deep in spots, mostly under the sidewalks. I know they are working on it, but it is unnerving parking your car there. It's built on top of an ages old trash dump, and the landfill was not adequately pounded down, and the more it gets watered for the grass, the more everything sinks. It's kind of bizarre. In the meantime, if you're looking for a place to stage a fake earthquake photo, and its not too hot outside, Centennial Park is the place to go! ;-) more
