You must be kidding 3/1/2009

They cleaned the place up and raised the $'s. Steaks are still average with Ruth's Chris prices now. Drinks were also pricey. 3 drinks, big steak, salad, au gratin potatoes, & mushrooms for $85?? ?? Ouch!!! more

Repulsive T-bone 1/1/2009

Ordered T-bone meduim. It was tasteless, tough, leathery & nasty. Only medium section was toward the bone, all else was crisp leather. I could have gotten a 'melt in your mouth' steak with free bread & liver pat'e' "to die for" from Besh Steakhouse in Harrahs. I've had a better tasting steak dinner at Hard Rock Cafe in the Quarters which includes veggie/ potatos. This is my FIRST/ ONLY review of a restaurant. But I was embarrassed to have suggested eating here with a friend and would really like a REFUND. CONS: HORRIBLE STEAKS PRO: NICE STAFF more

Best Steak in The World 12/26/2008

It's been years since my last visit and I'm thrilled that Charlie's is stil around. Definitely due a visit my next trip down. I travel throughout the world and have great memories of this little whole in the wall place having the best steak ever. A true New Orleans experience to be enjoyed. Praises for the focused menu with the choice cuts of meat being central to the meal. Bon Appetit! Pros: Food, service Cons: limited seating and parking more

Blech. 12/5/2008

No one going to Charlie's expects much ambiance. At least the walls are clean and, unlike pre-Katrina times, there's no TV in the corner to bother you. The lighting has, thankfully, dimmed and in all one would expect that this is one of those New Orleans institutions where one pays for the tradition and the good food. The problem is, the food is dreck. It isn't that I don't know what to expect, having eaten at Charlie's before. Sure, you get onion rings and nothing else for an appetizer, and the "salads" are merely a quarter head of iceberg lettuce. One simply accepts that. But moving on, the steaks taste awful. I don't have any complaints about the service or the cut of beef. The steaks just plain taste terrible. They have the texture of beef but the flavor of the insole of my ten-year-old tennis shoes. This is a restaurant for people to whom the quantity of food is much more important than the quality. You can get a better steak for half the price from Crazy Johnnie's, or a steak you'll never forget for the same price from Dominique's. Charlie's just isn't worth the time or the money. Pros: Good service. Tasty onion rings. Cons: Terrible steaks that are at best tasteless but more often repulsive. more

Good time, but expensive! 11/24/2008

Anybody who says the food is cheap is rich or crazy. Drinks, $7.50 at the bar, $4 with meal. The 28 oz Charlie's special is $42 before you pick up the fork. Our tab for six was $380 counting tip. A couple beers and no wine and one mixed drink. Everything else was great. Service, Great! Sticker shock!! from once a month to once a year. more

Never again 7/11/2005

My spouse and friends frequented this eatery often in the past and all raved about the steaks. My husband decided to treat me a few months back to lunch. Our steaks were tough and grisly... mine so much that I couldn't eat it. If this would have been my first steak, it would have also been my last. My husband and I discussed our adventure and decided that the restaurant must be using a much poorer quality cut of beef. Look elsewhere for that great steak! more

A true classic! 2/12/2005

This place is a must-eat, no questions asked. Please check it out! more

Excellent steaks. I have had the T-bone and the filet for lunch. Both are exceptional, and cooked exactly as ordered. Try the blue cheese salad dressing (second to none in flavor). You wont be dissappointed. This is a real New Orleans restaurant. Pros: Inexpensive, Good Service more

What a place!! 5/7/2004

On my very first visit recently, food was served promptly but it was hard to get the attention of the waiter for extras- drinks, ice, napkin, etc. Everything was great- I suggest everyone try Charlie's at least once- just be careful walking around since the steaks are brought to the table still sizzling, the floor is a bit on the greasy side!! Pros: VERY different, great food Cons: parking, greasy floor more

strange 5/14/2003

I always consider this place to be out of the Twilight Zone but wow what steaks! Unique to put it mildly! Pros: meat, salad, price Cons: neighborhood, sometimes gruff, selection more

"BARE BONES" T-BONES 1/12/2003

FIVE ENTREES, SMALL OR MED FILET OR SMALL, MED OR LARGE T-BONE. FRIES OR AU-GRATIN SPUDS, SAUTEED MUSHROOMS ON YOUR MEAT OR ONION RINGS. SALAD IS 1/4 HEAD OF UN SEPARATED LETTUCE WITH REAL BLUE CHEESE DRESSING. ALL STEAKS TASTE DIFF. T-BONES, FILETS, RIBEYES AND STRIPS, BUT FOR T-BONES, CHARLIES IS AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN RUTH'S CHRIS STEAKHOUSE. COME AS YOU ARE AND ENJOY THE WAITSTAFF WHO HAVE BEEN THERE SINCE THE LAND WAS CLEARED. Cons: PARKING more

most tasty and juicy steak 1/12/2003

At Charlie's Steakhouse the service is superb. You are in/out in no time, and totally belly happy. A whole in the wall but the food and service are great. Pros: inexpensive, great portions Cons: lacks ventilation more

Used to be the best! 1/3/2003

What can I say! Great steaks, sides along with pushy waiters and a hole in the wall atmosphere! My housekeeper could have a field day in the kitchen though... Pros: Steaks, sides, value! Cons: neighborhood, greasy floor, kitchen sanitation more

Best steaks in the States! 1/2/2003

I travel back to New Orleans about once a year for the last 25 years and included in every vist is a trip to Charlie's Steak House. You can't beat their steaks delivered straight to your table, hot and still popping hot grease all over your big cloth napkin given to you for just this event. The ambience is strickly New Orleans and the waiters are a delight with their distinct personalities. A spot you don't want to miss if visiting New Orleans. Best steaks in the country! Pros: great value, delightful waiters Cons: parking is on street, can be crowed more

Simply Steak 12/3/2002

Great Steak!!! 10/22/2002

We really enjoyed getting off of the "beaten path" for a good steak. I'd put this steak up there with any steak from Morton's or Ruth's Chris - it was absolutely perfect!!! Sides were all excellent, except the garlic bread which was just average. I'll go back every time I'm in New Orleans!!! Pros: Great Value, Delicious, Different more

good food 10/20/2002

I enjoy this place. you don,t need reservations.I like the fact that there's no menu and few selections.. What they offer is really good more

  • The Scene
Charlie's is old and it shows. Eating here recalls dining in a leftover American Legion Hall--wood-paneled walls, no windows, sooty lodge art. The best novelties are the nearly antique air conditioners, cash register, coolers and bar that apparently debuted when the place opened more than seven decades ago. New Orleans characters young and old hit Charlie's for a meaty meal. Expect college kids hankering for a big dinner and gritty, nostalgic old-timers.

    The Food
Menus? Who needs menus? Choose a T-bone (large or small) or filet. Order potatoes (au gratin or French fried), mushrooms and garlic bread a la carte. Opt for a salad (wedge of iceberg, onion and tomato slices), because how else are you gonna start a steak dinner? Dessert is spumoni with or without bits of cake built in.
