No one going to Charlie's expects much ambiance. At least the walls are clean and, unlike pre-Katrina times, there's no TV in the corner to bother you. The lighting has, thankfully, dimmed and in all one would expect that this is one of those New Orleans institutions where one pays for the tradition and the good food. The problem is, the food is dreck.
It isn't that I don't know what to expect, having eaten at Charlie's before. Sure, you get onion rings and nothing else for an appetizer, and the "salads" are merely a quarter head of iceberg lettuce. One simply accepts that. But moving on, the steaks taste awful. I don't have any complaints about the service or the cut of beef. The steaks just plain taste terrible. They have the texture of beef but the flavor of the insole of my ten-year-old tennis shoes. This is a restaurant for people to whom the quantity of food is much more important than the quality. You can get a better steak for half the price from Crazy Johnnie's, or a steak you'll never forget for the same price from Dominique's. Charlie's just isn't worth the time or the money.
Pros: Good service. Tasty onion rings.
Cons: Terrible steaks that are at best tasteless but more often repulsive.
