Great Food at a Great Price 6/1/2009

Try the prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes they are great. If you want a quite evening (great place to take a date) then go here. The meal was fantastic and I will be going back for again and again. The only reason why this place seems empty is becasue the building is hidden but just look for it across from the Rock House and you'll find it. Currently they are open only Fridays & Saturdays. The web site listed on the review is wrong... visit livermorecastlerock (dot com) to see a menu and pictures. Pros: Try the Prime Rib Cons: Only open Fridays & Saturdays more

Really, really bad 5/2/2009

What an unfortunate waste. The place was empty except for three other couples, and they crammed us all in to four tables in front of a fire place. So much for intimate conversation. We ordered a bottle of wine and were shown the bottle but then the server simply opened it and poured two glasses - no sample or test! then my husband got his salad that went with his meal before we got our appetizer (stay far, far away from the pesto chicken bruschetta), and my seafood linquini was literally swimming - and I do mean floating - on a 1/4-inch thick bowl of grease. All I could do was skim the pasta off the top and leave more than half the dish to drown in the grease. My husband's salmon was totally devoid of flavor. Go next door to the sports bar instead - you'll be happier. Pros: Beautiful building Cons: Overpriced bland food, service more

Quite Disappointing! 8/20/2006

I went to Castle Rock based on the two good reviews on this site. It was a HUGE mistake. The food was horrible. I got the halibut, and it tasted nothing like halibut. When the waiter brought my dish to the table, it smelled horrible, and tasted even worse. My husband ordered the rib eye...it had tons of fat, and was extremely undercooked. He ordered it medium rare, and it was very rare, and dry...which is hard to do, but they managed to do it. It definitely wasn't a $25 piece of meat. The only good thing about our meal was the pasta that my 2-year-old got, which tasted decent, and was only $5. \r \r The restaurant itself was nice inside. It looked very upscale, but was deserted. We were the only ones in the restaurant, so much so that every word either one of my kids said seemed to echo. \r \r We spent $80 on the worst meal I've ever had in a restaurant...that's $80 for just entrees and soda...no appetizer, no wine, no dessert. Definitely not worth the high price of the food!\r \r Pros: The kids' food was decent. Cons: The food was horrible. more

Unique treasure off the beaten path 6/17/2006

I find Sophie's review amusing. I could not be more at odds with the use of description (and spelling). My experience was as a result of our inabilty to be seated at our reservation time at a local well known restaurant in the area. I have driven by this quaint building and had often planned to dine there, but somehow I always opted for the corporate chain restaurants. Our dining experience was lovely! We arrived shortly after the restaurant opened for the evening, and per our gracious waitress, was informed that often, guests arrive later in the evening as a rule. The food was terrific! The prime rib is served exactly to order and this coupled with the freshly sauteed vegatables and mashed potatoes with a hint of garlic was more than adequate! Even better was the fact that on Friday and Saturday, it is offered at a reduced price. I love the charming and cozy atmosphere nestled within a true Livermore landmark. The service was genuine and attentive and I was equally pleased to see that our local wineries were represented in the wine offerings. Even though the Castle Rock may appear like a ""suit and tie"" establishment, guests are welcomed in shorts and tennis shoes without a blink. We now make it part of our family routine to visit as often as we can. Pros: Wonderful Food and Service! Cons: Not downtown and can be missed. more

Really Great! 6/9/2006

Castle Rock is a wonderful restaurant with really great food. I'm surprised most people in Livermore don't know about it, but the person that said it wasn't exciting enough for them, well that's probably why it's not jammed packed every night. I mean what do you expect out of a restaurant? Goto Fridays or Applebees if that's the kind place you're looking for. The food is absolutey terrific and very refined. The service is great, and the building is beautiful.\r \r The owner's family built that place out of rock they found all over the world. Inside, the place is filled with airlooms and antiques. It's like no other place in Livermore. \r \r It's very peaceful and quiet inside. You won't be bother by loud tables or obnoxious music. \r \r I encourage people to goto Castle Rock. It's Livermore history! more
