Often patients have unique dental problems with their teeth, jaw or facial bone structure, which can best be handled by an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty that includes the diagnosis and treatment of problems of the mouth, jaws, face and contiguous structures. Many people automatically think of impacted wisdom teeth when they think of oral surgery. While removal of teeth is a common procedure performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, the specialty provides expertise in treating many other problems. These include the replacement of missing teeth with dental implants, the correction of growth and developmental deformities of the face and jaws, the diagnosis and treatment of jaw joint disorders (TMJ), cleft lip and palate, cysts and tumors, repair of broken jaws (fractures), reconstruction of the jaws and cosmetic dental procedures.
An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is a dental specialist with surgical, medical, and anesthetic training who is dedicated to relieving pain, restoring function and improving facial appearance.
In addition to dental training, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons must also complete at least 4 years of intensive hospital-based surgical residency training. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons also have a thorough and comprehensive training in the administration of anesthesia, and may therefore, perform procedures with the use of nitrous oxide, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.
