Carnegie Museum of Art 2/28/2006

The Carnegie Museum of Art is a world-class institution in Oakland. Not only does it have a spectacular entrance (the three-story wall of glass and steps), but it houses an impressive collection of works ranging from modern artists to the Old Masters. Admission is pretty reasonable, and it includes admission to both the art museum and the sizable museum of natural history. You'll find everything from Monet and Matisse to featured contemporary graphic designers and architects. Make sure to check out the Hall of Architecture and the Hall of Sculpture. more

Give me a home where the dinosaurs roam 2/22/2006

Carnegie Museum of Natural history in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh is world famous. We visit at least once a year to see the new exhibits which they bring in. Currently a huge section is devoted to Egypt and all that it enthralls. The dinosaur area is currently under renovation. But when completed it will showcase one of the largest dinosaur exhibits of it's kind. The museum has a sit down restaurant, as well as a cafeteria for informal dining. Yearly and family memberships are available. This place is a real treat for people of all ages, especially the kids. It is a must see on any trip into Pittsburgh. more

Good Collection 11/15/2005

Carnegie has a very good collection of art from many different styles. They have an impressive standard exhibit of the old masters (impressionists, cubists, etc etc) as well as some newer modern art. Their special exhibits are outstanding. Many of the pieces in these exhibits are imported from the Louvre and various museums in NY and London-- not items that you can usually see in person unless you're able to travel extensively. Good museum, courteous staff, very reasonable admission. Highly recommended. more

Good place 10/12/2005

With multiple locations throughout the Pittsburgh area, the Carnegie Museums are a good way to spend a dreary day. There is the Science Center, the children's museum, and the main museum in Oakland near the University of Pittsburgh's campus. If you are a student, you can get in for free. The pricing is reasonable and the exhibits are exciting. Good, inexpensive way to get a little culture. more

An awesome mueseum 9/13/2005

Currently the exhibits feature Egypt, Bog mummies, gemstones (and other rock formations), and kid's size. I was in awe in the gem stone room where everything was sparkling and gorgeous. There are activities for kids in the kid's size exhibit! The exhibits are nicely designed and very ascetically pleasing. Make sure to stop by before the exhibits change! more

The Carnegie Museum of Art is a world class art museum that rightly sits atop the Pittsburgh museum hierarchy. The permanent collection features countless works of world repute and of local importance. The biennial Carnegie International consistently brings cutting edge art from all over the world into Pittsburgh. The Heinz Architectural Center is constantly celebration and educating on important architectural work around the world and in Southwestern Pennsylvania. If none of this excites you in the least, walk into the gift shop and buy some cool magnets. more

Nice Collection 8/19/2005

I first visited the Carnegie Museum of Art during Orientation, and ever since I have fallen in love with the place. The museum host a vast collection of everything from classic paintings to microfilms. The highlights of the museum are the works by Degas, Van Gogh and Cassatt. One cool feature of the museum is the Hall of sculpture which is modeled after the Parthenon. As a student, you get discount tickets to the museum. more

World-class museum; International exhibition is a must-see 8/19/2005

The Carnegie is respected the world over as a leading art museum. The permanent collection is certainly impressive enough, and the architecture and sculpture centers are great diversions from painting after painting. But the real pinnacle of the Carnegie is the International exhibition held every few years. Always impressively curated, it serves as a snapshot of contemporary art. The International features paintings as well as video and interactive exhibits. Many of the names shown in the International go on to become leading names of their time. Edward Hopper, John Singer Sargent, and Willem deKooning all got their start in International exhibits. more

Wide variety of good artwork 8/16/2005

The Carnegie Art Museum showcases a wide variety of artwork. They feature film, architecture, painting, and sculpture in styles ranging from impressionistic to very modern. Last time I went, they had an exhibit in which they showed scrambled versions of old nintendo games, which was kind of mesmorizing to stare it. The Carnegie Art Museum is relatively small, so it just takes a few hours to walk through, but what it lacks in size it definitely makes up in quality. more

Come see the Carnegie Museums! 8/11/2005

The Carnegie Museums of Natural History and Art are really amazing. It's a great place to go because their exhibits change frequently and there's so much to see you can't take it all in during a single visit. My favorite exhibit is the dinosaur exhibit which rivals any I've seen anywhere in the country. more
