Carlisle School was founded in 1968 by area business leaders, educators, and professional people in Martinsville, Virginia, who were interested in providing a community-based school which combined superior academics with high personal standards. Carlisle embraced the philosophy of offering a rigorous college-preparatory program and encouraging intellectual discipline and creativity; while also fostering the development of character and individual responsibility.
In September 1968, the school opened its doors for 81 students in grades 1-7. Today, Carlisle continues to provide a first class education to over 400 students in pre-school through grade 12. We are a regional school serving Danville, Virginia, Eden and Reidsville, North Carolina.
Among The Best Schools In The Nation - By every objective measurement, Carlisle School is among the best schools in the nation. Carlisle administers the Iowa Test each spring for students in first through eighth grades, and Carlisle School ranked in the 97th percentile in average student scores compared with public and private schools across the nation. Outstanding Iowa Test scores and International Baccalaureate Diploma Program scores give good insight as to how Carlisle students are doing compared to students nationwide or worldwide. Recognition for achievement in the performing arts and on the athletic fields, round out the picture of a school that is far more than an academic institution. Carlisle students are a diverse group.
Over the years, Carlisle School has kept pace with the most rigorous independent schools by continually examining curriculum issues and by seeking talented faculty with advanced degrees from diverse backgrounds.
The International Baccalaureate Program has been a logical step in that process. In the summer of 1998, Carlisle received notification that their application to participate in the IB Diploma Program was accepted, beginning September 1999. The IB program was originally developed to provide a standardized curriculum in the 11th and 12th grades and to emphasize the interconnectedness of disciplines, critical thinking and writing skills, and focus on global issues.
The IB program has high academic standards and a strong emphasis on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship, and the International Baccalaureate is recognized by universities worldwide as the highest level secondary diploma available anywhere in the world.
The excellence of our academic program spreads throughout the school with Iowa test scores in the 95th percentile for the student body.
