THE BEST 12/14/2011

I cannot express how much I, and my pets, enjoy this place. Everyone is always so friendly and kind to my pets and myself. The lady that runs this place knows what she is doing because all of the ladies know what they are talking about here when it comes to pet care unlike some other shady places. The dogs play together in groups all day long and come home tired. They do interviews on all of the dogs before you can bring your dog, to check its temperment so that they can best prevent letting an aggressive dog in, which is comforting to know. I do not know how they do it, but the place is always clean. It does not smell of feces or urine. They have always been accomodating to me and my pets, 2 dogs and 1 cat, when I needed someone to keep them last minute as I travel for work. \r My pets do not even care to see me when I pick them up anymore, they just want to stay here! This is my pets home away from home. Thanks Camp Care A Lot more

Nasty Smell 12/4/2010

I went in one day for a tour of the facility because my husband and I needed to board a cat and large dog, but when we walked around the facility, all we can smell is urine. It wasn't clean at all. The staff wasn't very friendly and it seem like they knew what they were doing. I spoke to my husband after the tour and we decided to board are 2 animals at Petsmart. I will make sure i inform my friends not to board any of there animals there at care-a-lot daycare and boarding. more

Caring and Clean 4/21/2010

I have been bringing my now 4 dogs to Camp for a few years now. I recently added a fourth dog to my crowd and brought her in for an interview. My fourth dog was what the manager calls ""a doggy nerd"". She worked closely with my dog when she comes and always keeps me informed on her progress and day. I am glad to say that I have seen an improvement in her overall temperment and she is now to me a well balanced dog! \r I take tours of the facility on a regular basis. I have never seen it a mess and it has never smelled foul unlike a few other highly regarded places in the area. \r The employee's are always pleasent and seem to enjoy their job, but who wouldn't enjoy working with dogs? I always feel like I get honest answers from them all. \r I highly recommend this place! I and my dogs will be happy customers for years to come! \r Pros: socialization, honest employees, clean place Cons: n/a more

Wonderful daycare 1/4/2010

Camp Care-a-lot is a great daycare and the packages are competitively priced. I've taken my puppy here since he was 12 weeks old. He loves it!! Ive read some of the older reviews (from 2007) that claimed the facility was not very clean. I completely disagree and perhaps this is an improvement over the last two years. I've taken a tour of the facility on two seperate occasions and I was impressed with the cleanliness of the boarding and daycare areas. Before taking my dog to Care-A-Lot, I toured several highly regarded facilities in the hampton roads area. Many of those facilities had a bad odor and the indoor play areas seemed unsanitary. My dog is always exhausted after a playday at Care-a-lot and I go to work knowing he is in good, caring hands. I highly recommend Camp Care-A-Lot!! Pros: friendly staff, clean facilities, daycare packages more

pleasantly surprised 2/15/2009

My husband and I often joke about sending our dogs to camp....when we finally did I was really happy with the outcome. Both my very large golden retriever and diva like cocker spaniel had a fantastic time. They have come home and are currently sleeping off 5 days of fun. My cocker spaniel Millie currently has an extra spring in her step. The facility is clean and huge, the employees are friendly and accommodating, and the other patrons are respectful. I have borded my dogs on other occasions and my golden gets so bored he gets hot spots from licking...not this time.\r \r I highly recommend care-a-lot. While it was a little pricey (especially if you have two dogs) it was worth every penny. Max and Millie will be attending camp again in the future. Pros: great program, clean facility, friendly pet loving staff, huge kennels, 10 hours a day of doggy recess Cons: a little pricey more

Love the freedom, but don't like the hours for customer service. 1/17/2009

I did like the fact that the dogs weren't cooped up all day in a cage. Facility seemed clean when we toured. In fact it was very clean and I did not notice any odors. I think they should always have someone at the desk and you would be able to pick up your pet at any time during the day. A report card about your pet and their behavior and amount of meals they ate such as Petsmart gives would be nice on the day of pick up. The day I dropped off my pet she was put in a rock covered area by herself and did seem to be forgotten about. I had to go in and ask for someone to take her away from the fence. The smaller dogs have a special area for them as well as older dogs. On the day I toured the little ones seemed quite happy. So much better than the cages that many of the other boarding facilities use. Pros: cage free for the most part Cons: hours for pick up and drop off more

I was thinking about putting our dog in Care-A-Lot for about a week while we go on out of town. We've taken a tour before, and it SEEMED to be nice... We usually use another facility, but have thought about trying other options. I came to this site to find out more info on their practices and to read what other patrons thought about their experiences. I've read some disturbing stuff. Is there anyone out there that can assure me that my ""baby"" will be given the best care and attention? (Other then the staff... they seem to think they are 5 -stars in every category). I wonder if a staff member has ever used their own facility? more

My pets love Camp Care A Lot 2/29/2008

I've read the reviews and want to give my two cents... We are long time users of Camp Care A Lot. We typically board our golden retriever 3-4 weeks a year plus weekends around the holidays. We are dropping him off this evening (Saturday evening b/t 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.). He will be joined by his new puppy ""sister"" golden. They will be boarded together in a deluxe kennel. I planned ahead to get the puppy all her shots. They will also get a bath before I pick them up in a week. Our dog loves it there!!!! He always gets excited when we drop him off. When we get him back, he is so tired because he loves ""running with the pack"" for a week. After a day of rest at home, he's back to his energetic self. The staff is professional. They have strict time schedules on the weekends and close at nap time. You just need to plan ahead. Once I came at nap time to drop off and they were very friendly and accommodating (but I won?t incontinence them like that again). The facility is clean. I've toured it more than once. I'm surprised to hear of the complaints. People need to plan ahead and take responsibility for themselves with regard to the scheduled drop off / pick up times on weekends. All of their hours are clearly posted. I've used other kennels that wouldn?t even have limited weekend hours. Other kennels either kept our large dog in a cage all week, or had outside play yards, but he was put back in the kennel wet and developed hot spots. At Camp Care A Lot, our pet is happy and healthy! Pros: Clean Facility & Professional Staff more

Care A Lot 1/26/2008

I would like to comment on what I feel is unprofessional behavior on the part of Care A Lot. I agree that businesses should have the ability to respond to comments written about them (which may not be possible on CitySearch- a fault, I agree). However, I do not believe it is appropriate for Care A Lot to write a review about themselves as a response to comments- and then to give themselves 5 stars, thus skewing the overall rating. Aside from the two 5-star ratings given TO care a lot BY care a lot, the overall rating should be 2.5 stars, not 4.5. \r \r As a side note, an unclean and unkempt facility is inexcusable, at any time of the year. If the establishment is unable to handle the busyness of the holidays it should not take on extra clients. Period. Also, I do not know of any boarding facilities that are not open at all over the weekends. This would be very bad business indeed since most people need a boarding facility ON THE WEEKEND.\r \r Care A Lot has many good qualities, but there is also a lot of room for improvement. Please take these comments into consideration instead of ignoring them and just coming up with absurd excuses.\r more

Dirty and over-extended 11/29/2007

Six months ago, I toured the facility after seeing an advertisement in the retail store. The employees were wonderful at that time and gave me an indepth tour while explaining their procedures and showing me where my dogs would sleep. Unfortunately, I returned back to Care-A-Lot the week leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday to see about having my dog boarded. I heard from a few current clients that they were extending their number of kennels by 80, so I asked to see the facility again since I hadn't seen it in a while. I waited in the lobby for ten minutes for someone to give me a tour. Now, what happens if there's an emergency, how long will it take for someone to respond to (heaven forbid) a dog fight? The young lady came out to give me a tour. Although she was very nice, she didn't seem to know her information about the kennel. As she showed me the old kennels that had previously looked in top shape, I noticed a stench radiating from the area. The floors were covered in dog hair and their ""housekeeping"" area had filthy dishes stacked, laundry that reaked of urine piled above the top of the bin. When I asked the young lady why nothing was being done about the mess, she said they were understaffed. Understaffed? Yet adding 80 kennels for the holidays? As a potential client that struck me as very odd. How can more pets be cared for with a staff that can't even handle their current load? I also noticed a paper on a kennel with two sad looking dogs inside. When I questioned the girl why these dogs were kenneled during the day against Care-A-Lot's no daytime kennel policy, she said they were not vaccinated. Non vaccination poses a threat to these animals as well as animals in the same area. A thorough facility should ckeck vaccinations before hand. I decided against boarding my dogs at this facility after that tour. I didn't feel right leaving my dog somewhere that was more concerned with packing in the pets than giving quality care to every individual animal. Pros: evaluation process Cons: Dirty, overextended employees more

Care-A-Lot kennels 8/27/2007

I took my 2 dogs to Care-A-Lot for a week. When i got them back one of my dogs had worms and was scared of my boyfriend. He snapped and growled at him, something he had never done before. My other dog was very out of it and didnt want to go near anyone. Also I took my dogs beds with them and one of the beds ""couldn't be found."" It was a large bed. All in all I did not like the place I will never take my pets here again. more

Good service; HORRIBLE hours 7/7/2007

I just boarded my dog for 1 week at Care A Lot for the first time. It appealed to me because I loved the fact that the dogs that are boarded get to participate in Day Care all day long on weekdays, instead of just being locked up in a kennel. The staff I met were very friendly and seemed very professional, and I felt at ease with leaving my dog with them. HOWEVER, my one complaint, and it is a big one, is that their hours are RIDICULOUS! During the week they are closed for 2 hours, from 12-2 p.m. (probably one of the most busy times of the day, since that is when everyone has a lunch break). They call it ""nap time,"" but I understand that it is really just to give the staff a lunch break. But they COMPLETELY shut down. You can't talk to anyone, you can't pick up your pet during that time... nothing. Now, do they all really need a 2 hour lunch break? Wouldn't it make a whole lot more sense to leave at least one person at the front to check in and out and answer questions? And during the weekends it's even worse. They are only open for TWO HOURS the entire day: from 8:30-9:30 a.m., then not again until 6:30-7:30 p.m. You have to pick up your pet before 12 noon in order to avoid being charged for another day. That is fair; most places have similar rules. But you only have a ONE HOUR window (8:30-9:30) to make it before noon! After that you have to wait until 6:30 to see your pet (AND pay for another day). If this was just a ""mom and pop"" type place, with little support staff or resources, I might be more understanding. But this is a big business, with plenty of resources and staff. There is just no reason for these insane, inconvenient hours. I don't know if I will ever use Care A Lot again, because it is just too difficult to work around their maddening, ludicrous schedule. Pros: Professional, Day Care all day for pets that are boarded Cons: Ludicrous, insane, ridiculous hours more
