Our dinner club ate here on Saturday night and it was absolutely fabulous. From the moment we arrived at the bar and were served our drinks from the great staff to the service in...

I think this place would be better if it wasn't in a shopping mall/business park setting... Pros: authentic ambiance Cons: food

Just yummy! 3/26/2005

Order the steak frites and you are in Paris. The chocolate cake is supreme. more

Not recommended 2/19/2005

Pretty good service. Food not a good value at all and not real french! No restroom in the restaurant have to ask for key and walk outside a little ways. Reservations required because of the small size of this place. Cons: expensive, no restroom inside, crowded more

My perfect spot. 9/2/2004

I love everything about Carafe, including Pascal. The food, the price of the food, the wine and the dessert. Gnocci Parisian was to die for. The lemonade is fun to make!! I will always be a huge fan. Pros: Everything more

Unassumingly awesome!!! 7/11/2004

My wife and I decided to swing on by before heading back to Redmond WA. We ordered the steak tartare for appetizers and were pleasantly suprised and impressed. For the entrees we chose the Mac and Cheese with Rabbit and the Duck confit alfredo. After the first taste we both agreed that this was no mere french snack stop, but a true destination worthy of going out of the way for. Bravo to the chef for the unique and memorable meal, we will be back for more. Pros: Great Food, Wine list more

Yummy 6/12/2004

My family went here for my birthday. It's always dangerous to try a restaurant on your birthday, but I figured, what the heck, right? I was very surprised. It was an amazing treat to be able to dine there before heading off to the ballet. My advice? Try the small plates, with a large amount of food on them, you won't be disappointed at all. The steak tartar is incredible. It practically melts in your mouth. Sample anything from the wine list, ask your server for the best there is. It's a great place to go and enjoy life. Pros: Good Food, Great Small Plates, Value more

Hamburger heaven 4/16/2004

Carafe rocks. I was rather put off at first by the location, but soon gave in and have since been back quite a few times. Carafe is a pleasant, mellow restaurant with outstanding quality food. The mussels: fantastic. The burger (with camembert): best in pdx. The fries: wow. I have gone on several occasions, mostly Friday or Saturday evenings and have never had to wait longer than 10 minutes for a seat. Once seated, the service was adequate, though not stellar. With food this good, it's just a great find regardless! I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys French bistro fare. Mmm... Pros: cute atmosphere, short wait, great food Cons: , somewhat expensive more

nice new addition 3/18/2004

Carafe's version of a gourmet burger was quite good. My favorite is still Castagna's, but this was better than that of Higgins. The fries are the best in PDX and served European style with homemade mayonnaise. The pumpkin soup was nothing special, but the sandwich of the day - roast beef - was delicious. You gotta have the Bifsteak. They were out of skate fish so they substituted some other fish for the Raie Grenobloise...not a good idea. The warm crepes with apple/pear sauce were a disappointment, but the espresso/ice cream concoction was creative and excellent and the star of the show. Pros: fries, fries, fries Cons: wait at lunch more

Outstanding 2/29/2004

My husband and I ate at Carafe this weekend and loved the food - from the mussels to the mustard-crusted rabbit to the citrus-filled crepe. All the food was purposeful, well-executed, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Our server made excellent recommendations on food and wine and encouraged us to take our time and linger over the menu. When the Keller burst open around 9:30 p.m. the restaurant got crowded and service was a bit slower. We'll definitely return. Pros: food, service more

Great food before 9pm! 12/21/2003

Wonderful French food. Close your eyes and you can imagine being in Paris. Rabbit, Duck Confit, Sweetbreads. It's all here. The only two negatives were: 1) Bathroom is *outside* the restaurant in the parking garage. Access is via a key with a large metal tag, not unlike my neighborhood Texaco gas station key. 2) After 9pm, the dinner menu becomes a ""Bistro"" menu with very few choices for dinner. Arrive before 9pm! Pros: Great French Food, Ambiance Cons: Bathroom outside, Need more French wine more

Incredible Lunch 11/17/2003

My co workers took me to Carafe for my birthday--one of the best lunches we have ever had. Our service was prompt and friendly and the food--absolutely spectacular. Don't miss the bifsteak frites, the pumpkin pasta, and order their specials because they were delicious. The profitaroles were perfect and the bittersweet chocolate cake had a wonderful mousse-like texture. The Camembert cheese plate--not be missed. Can't wait to try this place for dinner! Pros: excellent food, desserts, service Cons: bathroom situation more

Pretty mediocre 11/9/2003

We waited 20 minutes before we could catch our server to order drinks. The server never mentioned the option of buying carafe of wine and the list was not visible to us and not on the wine list. Service was poor. The space looks like a diner not a Parisan cafe and is noisy. The food was mediocre. The pomme frittes were good and the salad was well dressed but boring. Pros: small carafes of wine Cons: parking, poor service, poor value more

Fabulous Find in Downtown Portland! 10/8/2003

I love this restaurant! Meals are absolutely fabulous. I had the steak tartare; it was superb. My partner had a grilled anchovies with arugula. Wow, I want that next time. For main course, I had the skate--it was melt in your mouth. My partner had the pork chop. He said it was better than any veal chop he had ever had. The martinis were perfect and the wine list has many really fine wines--we had a delectable one at quite a reasonable price. We will definitely be regulars. Pros: food, bar and wine, decor more

Carafe is a Wonderful Experience! 8/27/2003

This is a magnificent new restaurant! The food that Chef Pascal makes is fabulous--I loved his food when he was at Lucere. Now that he and his wife have their own restaurant, his expertise is really able to shine. Fabulous dishes are prepared at really reasonable prices. The wine list offers a fantastic selection at good value. The decor is inviting--the service was good. I cannot wait to go back and try some of the specialties. I will be a regular! Pros: fabulous food, great wine, great bar more
