In Short
Cape Lookout Trail is nearly level at its start, then traverses high above Sand Lake Beach, offering views from atop the bluff before making its way around perpendicular cliffs hundreds of feet high. During a 1992 storm, 300 feet of trail slid into the ocean and the path was rerouted farther inland. By 1993, the reroute had deteriorated to a steep 1/2-mile trough of foot-deep mud. Things have settled, but the pitch still muddies up in wet weather.
