Fancy schmacy vegan 5/10/2012

Leave your hemp fanny pack at home, vegans, because this place is clas$y (intentional use of dollar sign). Delicious food, but stick with the cooked stuff since the raw plates are small and heavy on the sprouts and lettuce. more

Best Brunch 1/30/2012

My girlfriend, who is a vegetarian, turned me onto this place. For not being a vegetarian myself I really enjoy coming here for brunch. Their lentil cakes are awesome. more

My New Favorite Spot 5/20/2011

i was first introduced to this place by my die hard vegan cousin in an attempt to sway me from a life of eating meat. Though this attempt was unsuccessful i really enjoyed myself in this this chic restaurant that is without question one of the hottest places to dine in town. When we arrived there was already a line down the block to get into this one level 10-12 table/seated area, so already our expectations had been raised. I have often playfully teased my cousin's dietary choices proclaiming that her diet consists of strictly seaweed, tofu, and celery sticks but was quickly humbled by the array of dishes. I was skeptical that a vegan eatery could fill me up. However, the food always leaves you completely satisfied. I will never doubt them again. If you're looking for a good excuse to turn vegan/vegetarian start here. more

Nice but boring 6/2/2010

I had dinner here about 2 years back. I have to admit, I am no fan of seitan but Candle 79 surely does something magical with it. The chimichurri was really good. I had the paella for the entree, and while good, didn't leave a memorable impression. Pros: seitan, drinks Cons: price more

New York's best vegetarian? 8/7/2009

I had dinner here with my best friend from elementary school; I was on vacation visiting NYC. On first impression, the restaurant is decorated quite tacky. I have an expectation for vegan food to have a little more style and excitement, that is, I expect at least one menu item to be new in some way, whether it be an interesting combination or a new ingredient. I think the word I'm looking for is ""refreshing"". Candle 79, was very well executed food, but lacked menu appeal. I was very happy to find a Cherry Lime Rickey on the drink menu. Pros: Quality vegan food Cons: Not exciting more

Interesting on paper but effectively boring 12/25/2008

As a meat eater trying Candle for its good reviews and out of curiosity I found the food nicely presented but boring and over priced. I am sure with the interesting list of ingredients and some appropriate spices a more titillating experience can be created. Maybe we were just unlucky but it cost too much to give it another try with dubious outcome. Pros: Nice place and presentation Cons: Boring taste for the price more

Best Vegan in New York, Great Service, Great Environment 3/31/2008

This place was AWESOME!!! We are from Memphis, TN, so vegan is hard to come by. We ate at about 7 different places while in New York that were all Vegan, and this place takes first place. The service was perfect, the environment was great and catered to either dressy or casual. The bar was cool and the cocktails made with sake. Go for the Mohito, it was great. The food was very flavorful and cooked to perfection. If you go for desert, I recommend the sunday...it is pricey, but worth every penny. For my wife and I to dine there our bill was about $125. We had two appetizers, main corse, mohitos and desert. It was pricey, but it was worth every penny. Their seitan is the best I have ever had! Go see them and experience great great vegan dining. Pros: Great Ambience, Great Food, Great Service, Great Everything Cons: I wanted to eat there twice but didn't have time more

Artfully prepared 1/1/2008

The only vegan food in Manhattan that I have tried so far that comes close to this is Gobo (in comparison, this was slightly better food, although at a more upscale price). Putting vegan aside, this ranks as one of the meals that has impressed me the most---across service and cuisine---of the hundreds of restaurants I've tried in six year in Manhattan. Pros: artful incorporation of mushrooms in many dishes more

Vegetarian food that even beef lovers can appreciate 2/25/2007

I took my wife, who is a vegetarian, to Candle 79 for her birthday. I am completely the opposite, loving as much beef as I can put my hands on. Not only was my wife very pleased, but I also loved the food! This is a great vegetarian option that is out of the ordinary and can be a perfect date spot. With nice ambiance while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere, Candle 79 is probably one of the top five vegetarian restaurants in New York City. Pros: Excellent food at excellent value more

Great Food, HORRIBLE Catering 9/6/2006

I'm a regular here, and adore the food. So when it came time to have our wedding catered, it was a no-brainer. What a mistake. Pros: Great Food Cons: Bait and Switch with Catering more

The best meal I've had in NYC. 8/13/2006

From beginning to end, the dinner I had last night was the best culinary experience I've had in almost ten years of living in New York City. And the fact it was all vegan makes it even sweeter. And speaking of sweet, you have not lived until you've indulged in chocolate peanut butter bliss. Pros: Friendly knowledgable staff, AMAZING food, classy atmosphere Cons: Can't afford to go every day more

Great Spot 6/24/2005

I'm usually not a big fan of vegeterian cuisine but great food coupled with the ambiance has got me to be a repeat customer. Great place for an intimate dinner. more
