I have not been to Calico ghost town for a few years but I have been thinking about it lately because it's a place I'd like to take my children. I looked them up on the Internet to see if they were still open and they are.
At their web site, http://www.calicotown.com/, you can get the dates and hours of operation, admission prices, and get some history on the town. You can find camping prices and see the dates of special events. One-third of the town is original and the rest of it they carefully built to capture the spirit and adventure of the old west! If you're ever in the area, I recommend going!
Some of the upcoming events:
October 6, 7, & 8, 2006 (Columbus Day Weekend)
Relive Calico's glory days during our pirit Mining celebration. Enjoy a wild west parade, National Gunfight Stunt Exhibition, old prospectors burro run, along with various 1880's games and contests.
October 27, 28, 29, 2006 (Last Weekend in October)
Visit Maggies Haunted Mine (if you dare), China Town's Haunted Ruins, & Calico's Terror Silver Train. Pumpkin Carving, Costume Contests, Trick-or-Treat, Halloween Characters and Inflatables and Ghost Stories in the afternoon and evening hours.
I enjoyed visiting the web page and it took me back down memory lane. I enjoyed getting a taste of the old west when I was a child and I wish it were a little closer to Bakersfield so I could go there more often! The shops are neat, kids will enjoy the street performances, there is a little something for everyone.
One word of advise if the heat bothers you, try not to go during the summer as it gets very hot and you may end up miserable!, which may make your trip not that fun and Calico is a place that deserves to be enjoyed.
