Are there actual coffee SHOPS in Seattle?
For several magical years the Market was the start and end of everyday. My husband worked in the Market, my primary client was in the market, our gym was in the Market, most of our dining choices were in (or around) the Market and, not surprisingly, our coffee was near the Market. I miss the Market.
This is perhaps the most hotly contested debate in Seattle. In my opinion the measure of a great coffee house is their espresso, the foundation of Cafe Latte, Cafe Breve, Cappuccino and cafe Americano.
The impossibly nice and capable baristas at Caffe D'arte consistently pull a perfect shot of espresso. Never too hot to drink (piping hot espresso can be a problem) and delivered before the shot has a chance to oxidize, each espresso packs a pleasant, but potent aroma. The flavor is intense with naturally sweet notes of freshly ground coffee. The texture or mouthfeel is smooth and thick. The crema is the color of dark caramel. A pleasurable aftertaste lingers on the palate for minutes after consumption.
The cafe is bright and cheery, even on dark Seattle days and free from the buzz of blenders. Whole bean coffee is available to take home. Pastry selection is limited.
