Great vegetarian selection 7/10/2011

My husband and I are vegan and we love Cafe Trang. They have a fair sized vegetarian section in the menu, and you'll notice if you look through the rest of the menu that many of the other dishes can be made vegetarian by substituting tofu for the protein. They also say on the menu which dishes can be made vegan. One of our favorite dishes is the lemongrass tofu, which is tofu triangles coated with lemongrass and curry and pan fried with hot chilies and curried onion. Another favorite is the vegetarian malaysian noodles, which are are curried broad noodles with tofu and vegetables mixed in. The reason I gave Trang 4 instead of 5 stars is that a couple of times, out of the 20 or 30 times we've eaten there, the food was sub-par. I'm thinking they may have been training a new chef. more

Cafe Trang, has a lot of options, they have chinese food and some sushi I believe too. The lunch specials are by far the best deal, if you want EXACTLY what they are offering, they will not substitute side dishes, even if you have an allergy to what the side is. I honestly recommend walking an extra block to J-Wongs which is just as expensive if not more but they will work with you on your order and They have english speaking workers answering the phones so you can actually get your order right with out confusion or stress more

Great Ambiance in a Historic building music is free. 12/17/2009

Please do not visit Ann's ""Cafe Trang"", unless you are ready for some exciting, good food. I was new in town and they have given me new faith in International Asian cuisine. They are planning renovations to the interior that sould extremely exiting by an award winning design firm, too. Pros: This food is prepared with maticulous care! Cons: How many times, you can visit in a month...ten or so I hope more

The 171 is amazing. 11/12/2007

A must go for delicious Asian fare. Make your own spring rolls, dip them in the peanut sauce, and sit back and smile as your mouth goes to a happy place. Man, I miss this place since moving back East. Order an extra skewer of fried Tofu, and split your platter! So delicious! My friends and I would tell the wait staff if we were on lunch hour, and were always out in time to head back to work. Good times! Pros: Try the vegetarian menu Cons: Can't remember any. The food was too darn good. more

Worst Service 7/7/2007

The service at this restaraunt was terrible. The restaurant was pretty much empty and it took them 20 minutes to get out out appetizers. Then they brought us the wrong the beer and it went downhill from there. There were 5 tables occupied in the entire restaurant. They served my husband his entree and did not bring mine out for 15 minutes. We said something to the waitress and another woman appeared who we had not seen before and said it was her fault - ??? She proceeded to tell us the restaurant was very busy and that was the delay for the food and offered to remake my husbands now cold entree. No one refilled our water until we asked for the check nor did they ask if we wanted another drink or check on our meal. Cons: SERVICE more

Hmmm. 4/25/2007

Just went here for the first time the other night. The place was clean, and inviting. The service was pretty slow. I didn't get a refill on my drink ever, but we did get our waters refilled once or twice. The waitress gave us our check and said she'd be our cashier, but never came back. The prices were reasonable to me, and the food fairly good. What I was disappointed in was their vegetarian menu. Being a vegetarian I was quite excited to see a whole section devoted to vegetarianism. Unfortunately quite a few of the dishes (mainly the soups) weren't vegetarian at all! Every soup was made either with chicken or beef stock. At least they wrote it on the menu though, right? My husband loved it though. We'll probably go back, but not often that's for sure. Pros: big vegetarian menu, clean, friendly Cons: slow service more

THE BEST!!! 4/17/2007

halcyon days 3/18/2007

once upon a time Cafe Trang was my favorite place to eat, those days however are long gone. when they changed their menu at in 2005/06 they really got it wrong. as many other reviews have stated they are a VIETNAMESE restaurant and should have stuck to what made them good, regrettably they did not. also they raised the prices on most menu items by about $1.00 except the vegetarian items which rose by $3-4.00, being a vegetarian this was the final straw, i took one look at the ""new"" menu, stood up, walked out, and have never gone back. i hope some other restaurant opens and takes their place. and to the old Trang, we all miss you, we know you won't come back but please consider it, plus haven't you noticed a steady decline in business? you can even see it from the outside. Pros: Trang was once one of the best places to eat in salt lake. Cons: Trang is no longer one of the best places to eat in salt lake more

Slow wait service, Burned food at downtown location 2/18/2007

Some 2 years ago, a trusted friend recommended CafeTrang and because I enjoy and love trying Asian restaurants, I went expecting great food. What I got was slow service (and with only some 3 tables of people present) and 2/3 of my plate selections, burned. The spring roll was black burned on half the portion and the rice was also burned. I tried a very small portion of the rice that didn't appear as burned, and it had an ""old"" , ""been in the restaurant too long"" taste. I returned my meal, and left. NOT recommended. Pros: ???? Cons: Most of my food was burned, bleah more

Amaizing asian food 12/20/2006

This was my dad's favorite restaurant when he worked downtown. Now it is one of mine. The selection is great. There is always something new to try and I am always amaized when I try a new dish. The food is excellent. The only drawback is the need to drive there. I highly recommend it. If you like asian food, you will love Cafe Trang. Pros: Food, Ambiance, Service Cons: location more

Great food, not-so-great service 10/1/2006

I love the food at Cafe Trang, but their service isn't all that awesome, even on very slow nights. The food makes up for it most of the time, though! The General Tso's is my boyfriend's favorite, the caramel pork and chicken lettuce wraps with plum sauce are tasty as well. The hot and sour soup is quite spicy, and very flavorful. The green curry was too spicy, but bland at the same time... it's the only dish I've ever been disappointed in. I have had problems with language barriers on several visits, and the waitresses aren't very familiar with the new menus, so don't rely on suggestions. Don't expect to get prompt refills on drinks, the waitresses disappear after your food has been brought out. Pros: Good-sized portions Cons: Inattentive wait staff more

Stick with Vietnamese 9/20/2005

This is an old favorite of mine. I have always liked the flavors of the Vietnamese food and even some of the Chinese food here. They have however changed their menu. They offer a lot less Vietnamese food and now they think they know how to make Thai food. I ordered a Curry out of curiousity it was bad. The Pho noodles I had with it were good as usual. They should stay with what they do best/ By the way I tasted their Pad Thai awful. Pros: Vietnamese food, Chinese Food, Spring Rolls Cons: Bad Thai food, smaller menu, more bad Thai food more

Went there for lunch. Service was slow, food was OK. The waitress was friendly Pros: good food Cons: smells , slow service more

Always good 5/30/2003

I eat here once a week and never have the same thing except the iced coffee. Always good food. Much to choose from. Service can vary from one time to another with mistakes with orders or communication problems. Always fast with food to the table. Pretty good Oriental place. Up there with the best like Kyoto and Bangkok Thai. Pros: big menu, quick food, good flavor Cons: language problems more

I like it 4/27/2003

Really tasty. Best hot and sour soup on the planet. I eat here a lot more

Ignore the mall and go! 2/7/2003

Don't let the mall setting put you off. The Vietnamese and Thai dishes on this extensive menu are delicious, authentic and inexpensive. Fresh herbs and delicious broths make the soup items a must! more

Awesome mall food! 1/29/2003

Best restaurant in Cottonwood Mall. Prices are a little higher than average, but worth it. The lone time I've been there, I got carry-out. This is the among the best Oriental-Vietnamese fare I've encountered here in SLC. Pros: Central location Cons: Mall parking - yuk more

seen better days 11/15/2002

Cafe Trang used to be good...what happened? The food is mediocre, the restaraunt is dirty and the service is average. Cons: dirty, bland more

Yumm 9/23/2002

Everytime I have been to Cafe Trang the service and food have been amazing. In my dining career, I have become one of those dreaded customers that quizzes the server on what to eat. Each time at Cafe Trang they barely seem annoyed by the time commitment I demand and ultimately point me in the right direction. Excellent quality for the price and service. The Shrimp Curry Special they had the other night was sooo yummy. Pros: Service, Inexpensive, Yummy Cons: Crowded, Noisy more

The portions are small and the prices much higher amazining how notarity goes to some places. Pros: decor Cons: overpriced more
