Food terrific, service atrocious 4/20/2008

One of the best Italian meals we have had. But that said, we will probably never go back. Our party of 7 sat for over 30 minutes before any bread was brought to the table, and then after 15 minutes I had to flag a busboy to get our waiter (who was never further than 15 feet from our table in this tiny restaurant) to come over to take our orders. We also object to any but the toniest of 4-star restaurants who cannot provide a decent wine under $35. This is totally absurd, especially for a place as big as our living room, with no ambience, located in a strip commercial building.\r \r That said, we highly recommend the roasted chicken in linguine with shiitake mushrooms in a madeira sauce, and the gnocchi with shrimp and linguine. Even the shaved parmesan was top notch. My wife was also impressed with the caesar salad, especially after requesting an extra anchovy, they brought out a virtual string of fish.\r \r Please, Cafe, hire some waiters who will do your fantastic chef the appropriate service. And provide a reasonably priced vin ordinaire. Pros: The FOOD!!! Cons: The indifferent waiters! more

They've slipped . . . 9/13/2007

Cafe Torre has slipped. Everyone in our party had dined here before, so we expected the food, service, and ambience to be on par w/our last experience and Cafe Marcella in Los Gatos, which is where Vince Torre got his start.\r \r Our welcome was not a warm welcome, nor were the wait staff friendly. We were ignored while other late-comers were served first while we waited and waited and waited. While we waited, we had plenty of time to notice the soiled table cloth which apparently had been used by the last evening's dinner guests. \r \r When our food finally was served, the server knocked over a glass of water and offered no apology. Start to finish, the entire experience was a dismal disappointment, including the ladie's room, which could definitely use some sprucing and a bit more light. Pros: location Cons: service, lack of cleanliness, unappetizing food more

fresh medittaranean food! 1/25/2007

i have no idea what restaraunt some of these reviewers are talking about. Every time i go to Cafe Torre I'm greeted nicely and seated promptly. I usually order the seafood pasta and nothing was bland about it! the shrimp and clams were really fresh and the pasta was perfectly al dente. If your looking for something on par with Olive Garden then i reccomend going somewhere else. The prices are fair considering the caliber of ingredients used, its obvious that all the food is freshly prepared and not stored in a freezer until someone orders it. The extensive wine list was impressive and the wine tasting option is great for dinner with appetizers. This is one of my favorite italian restaraunts in the bay area from its delicious food to its exceptional interior. The food is really authentic italian/medittaranean seeing as how the owner hails from coastal Croatia ( right across the adriatic from italy) I reccomend this place for dates or family nights out. Pros: Fresh Ingredients, Quant Interior, Attentive Serive, Personable Staff Cons: Picky eaters may not find what theyre looking for, busy on weeknights more

Overrated and bland food 1/12/2007

I have been here a few times with work people. So far, I have not been impressed at all with their food. The place just seems pretentious and overpriced. I wouldn't come here if I was paying myself. I had a seafood pasta the first time and it was very bland, just a bunch of flavorless tomato sauce poured all over linguine yucky mussells. I had to put a whole bunch of pepper in it just to get some taste. The second time I ordered the lamb sandwich, which was another dissappointment. Very bland, no taste at all. I usually love Italian, but this place is just not worth the money. You'll find better and cheaper food at Olive Garden or any other half decent Italian place down the street. I'm only giving it a 3 for the their decor. I have heard good things about their lasagna but I don't think its worth a return visit to try. Pros: Clean, prompt service Cons: low quality food, bland, overpriced more

Let down... 8/8/2006

I visited Cafe Torre based on praise from a friend whose judgment I respect. Regretably I was disappointed and here is why: when I arrived I was not greeted with a hello or any welcoming gesture by the host/greeter--just a neutral stare which made me feel like an intruder. I spoke first indicating my name & reservation The host walked me to my table. First impressions are critical; if I was dining alone I might have decided this was not a good start and retreat but I was meeting a friend for a celebratory meal and good time. The awkward chill was evident in the table server too, had he just been spanked? Stiff upper lip and some. The mood felt slightly miltant so I behaved until my friend arrived. Two tables behind me a gregarious attorney barked orders to his office via cell phone; a conversation that appeared to have a half life of 5 hours. Definitely not a plus from my point of view, having just arrived from MY own 10 hour day of business. The estimable Counselor must be a regular patron; his table at C.Torre appeared to be his office away from office whoops, I mean bench, so I reckon he can cell phone yammer at will. So much for us simple folk desiring relief from the racket.\r \r Our waiter was professional, courteous but slightly stiff as well. Does anybody smile around here? Don't even think about a full bore belly laugh. Okay, okay, let's talk food. \r \r They offer an nice variety of entrees and an extensive, interesting array of wines too.\r The Nicoise salad was very nice and attractively served; the pasta with mussels was average and the portions small. Not memorable. What is memorable is the odd ambience and that will icell any plan to return. Pros: pleasant interior, nicely disposed for informal, chummy dining; great wines to sample and chose from. Cons: awkward atmospherics; cool dispositions of staff. I had a feeling that I come here on an off night, I got tired of feelling like I came here on an off night. more

Best little place 7/19/2006

This place is such a great find! It feels like homemade, but better. Great wine list, amazing pasta and seafood, and always attentive service. Just a tip--they have the best lasagne I have ever had. They use super fine noodles that somehow dissolve in your mouth. This is not always on the menu, but if you ask for it, they usually will find some. Pros: Great pasta, long wine list, intimate place Cons: can't hold big parties...kind of random location, but it is sooo good! more

cozy and delicious neighborhood find! 11/30/2005

cafe torre is a lovely and cozy italian restaurant hidden in cupertino. the food was fantastic, we had the calamari, pasta and creme brulee and a glass of wine. its tucked away in a little strip mall on stevens creek so its very intimate and quiet. i think the servers were a little swamped as i noticed a few tables waiting to have their orders taken, plates to be cleared, dessert to be offered and the bill to be given (including us). the bus boy on the other hand, did a marvelous job. maybe it was just a busy night, it was a full house on a tuesday! though the service was a bit slow, the food left a long-lasting impression. Pros: delicious food, cozy quiet ambiance Cons: slow service more

Best Italian 7/7/2004

Cafe Torre is by far some of the best italian food i have tasted in the bay area. The food is excellent and the waiters are very attentive. Vince Torre takes great pride in his restaruant and it shows. Its classy without being arrogant. The ambience is cozy and comfortable. I cant wait to go back again! Pros: Attentitive Waiters, Cozy, Romantic more

Neighborhood Favorite 10/30/2002

Vince Torre's little gem in Cupertino has quickly become a local favorite. Not straying far from what he knows well, Vince offers wonderful Italian fare from a menu of old favorites and daily specials. The wine list has some local California favorites, as well as an interesting selection of European vintages. The pastas are always terrific, and the seafood the freshest I've found almost anywhere. It's very popular, so reservations are recommended. Pros: attentive service, good wine list, owner on premises more
