Excellent food and drinks 9/21/2008

Visiting from out of town and located the Cafe Gutenberg for coffee and a nice lazy Sunday lunch. The menu was quite varied and our food was wonderful. In addition the coffee and drinks were top notch. Their beer list featured a wonderful selection of the world's best beers, from Schneider Aventinus to Bell's Oberon to Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout. My wife was quite happy with their selection of champagne drinks. Lots of books and magazines to read and keep you entertained. The wait staff was friendly and very attentive. We spent a lazy 3 hours there and would very happily visit the Cafe Gutenberg again on our next visit to Richmond. more

Fresh, inspired food matches lovely atmosphere 2/27/2008

This cafe is clearly ahead of its' time. I used to come for just coffee but had no idea how great their menu selection was. The mussel bisque was incredible and the fish was grilled and seasoned perfectly. They have an amazing beer list that is half price on Tuesdays. Unlike alot of restaurants, they pay attention to the details without being pretentious. Pros: Very original Cons: Parking is difficult more

Bad meal, limited menu 1/26/2008

Cafe Gutenberg is cozy, but the food has really gone downhill recently. I had a terrible meal there - how can you mess up a salad? They're trying too hard with pretentious food, and it's failing. I used to recommend this place, but now I'd say save your money, because it is also overpriced, and the service is absolutely terrible. Pros: Cozy space Cons: Food isn't great, overpriced, bad service more

Terrible, snobby service. Always seem to be out of anything on the menu. 1/26/2008

The service is snotty, the litchen is unable to accomodate simple requests because ""the chef doesn't feel like it"", and everything is overpriced. Spend your money in a place where you are appreciated as a customer. more

Most unique find 10/1/2007

We stumbled on Cafe Gutenberg during a weekend stay in Richmond- and have to say it was definitely the culinary highlight of the trip, if not the overall highlight. The loveliness of the setting (cozy tables and booklined walls) was matched with delicious food. The fried green tomatoes with hearty breading, and the grilled corn salad that accompanied it, was wonderful, as was the cheese plate served with crackers, apricot spread, and grapes. This place is a gem. more

Formerly Known As Main Street Grill 6/24/2007

Lacks organization, the service ain't top, but the food, coffee, and wine are pretty good. There are books, too. I don't find myself going there too often, probably because it doesn't open till 11am on weekdays, which are the days I prefer going to get morning coffee. Pros: omlettes Cons: service, weekday hours, city street parking. more

Goo menu, good entree, great desert 11/18/2006

Very interesting restaurant. Combination coffeehaus, restaurant and book store. Pros: Funky and deserts more

My favorite upscale coffee house 2/22/2006

This place has amazing food and coffee. I am especially fond of their tapas and desserts. The servers are very consistent and eager to help. Pros: great food, good coffee, service Cons: tables are small more
