Used to be a good place, now avoid at all costs 5/22/2012

I have eaten at Cafe Europa for about 5 years now. I have dealt with the uncaring owners stares, the haggling over their gift certificates, but I have always come back since the food was good, and gave generous portions. I have been away for about a year, and came back. The surly owner staring you down was still there, and my friend and I ordered a large stromboli. We expected to have enough to eat half and take home for dinner for the price of a gourmet pizza. What we received was can only be described as small, it was a string an inch wide and 6 long. It wasn't crisp on the outside, but was overall ok. We asked our server, if they brought out small portions, and we were told this was large. We got the bill, and indeed it was large. Needless to say, having eaten here before, it was a shock to see one of the few bright sides of Cafe Europa, also take a downturn. I let a few weeks pass before posting this review, and still the experience stuck with me. New Hope is an expensive place to eat, and trying to find food that is reasonable is a challenge. Cafe Europa is not what it once was, we were the only people eating on a Saturday afternoon, and the economy and location must have gotten to the bottom line. I would not recommend eating here unless there are no other options available. I am saddened by this, as this used to be a place to avoid the high priced, low service fare of New Hope. more

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly 10/4/2010

First the good. Upon entering, my wife and I noticed the crowd at the bar and decided to go where the people were. The bartender informed us of the Happy Hour Specials, as well as the upcoming ?All You Can Eat Pasta Night,? both of which sounded like great deals. We decided to take advantage of the aforementioned Happy Hour prices and order two entrees. I got Lasagna Bolognese and my wife, upon the high recommendation of the bartender, chose the Chicken Marsala. Both entrees came with salad and bread, making both meals absolutely delicious and well worth the price, even had there not been the $2.00 Happy Hour discount. Now the bad. The owner came around and casually chatted with the 5 or so people that were at the bar before introducing himself to us. While this was very quaint and pleasant, things quickly turned around when he sat down and proceeded to alternate between long yarns of stories that either had nothing to do with the conversation/made absolutely no sense, and complaining about his physical pains. He was literally moaning and groaning at the bar until we left. Who knows how long it continued and honestly, if I wanted to hear that, I?d call my mother in law. And the ugly. As if the nonstop complaining of physical dilemmas wasn?t bad enough, we also had to hear the owner berate the staff, repeatedly AND in front of customers. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the service at the bar, yet the numerous condescending and off the mark comments he made were totally uncalled for and made everyone around visibly uncomfortable. Right before we left, I had to use the restroom (that?s a whole other story) located behind the kitchen and I could hear the man screaming at the kitchen staff through the door. All in all, I don?t think my wife and I will return. The food and service were very, very good, but the bad and the ugly aspects were too much to take. Take out maybe. more

Interesting experience 9/20/2009

I enjoyed the pizza. Did not try any of the other food. My only prolem and it was a big one, was the service. I don't think you could find a full brain there if you put all the heads together. Service was bad, bad bad! Trying to talk to the owner was like talking to a fence. He starts telling stories that don't make sense than looked at me like understand? Believe me, I did not! Pros: Pizza was good Cons: service was terrible more

Not Very Good 7/26/2009

The food was below average, but the service was worst. Although the waitress was pleasant, 2 entries came out and were almost finished, before our other 2 meals were delivered. We also ordered a gimlet and the bartender did not know how to make it!! After that we decided on wine, figuring the bartender could handle that. That was a mistake. It was terrrible and tasted like it had been opened weeks ago. Pros: Gave us a good story to tell. Cons: The food was not good more

I do not recommend 6/14/2009

The food was not bad. For pizza food I may have even said it was good, but after visiting the bathroom, I will never go back. It was dirty. Very dirty. There was no soap and no paper towels. This left me wondering if the staff washed their hands! Pros: The food was not bad, not great, but not bad. Cons: Bathroom was gross!!!!!!!!!!!! more
