A tasty way to give back 10/27/2008

Many of us give back to our communities in a variety of ways, but I have yet to find a tastier way! While the interior isn't what one would find in a 5 star restaurant, the thought that the proceeds go to charity really makes one forget about unnecessary frills. Like many others, I stumbled across this place while looking for a quaint little brunch place. The unique mix of traditional southern, creole, and spanish influences leads to quite the mix of flavors. My personal favorite? I'd have to say the Ay Dios Mio!, a Puerto Rican flavored roast pork with soffrito, scrambled eggs and sweet plantains. If you want to avoid the typical snooty brunch places and feel like giving back in the process, you should definitely check this place out. more

Now serving dinner, still serving others 10/15/2008

After finding out that this place is now open for dinner to the public on Thursdays and Fridays, I decided to give their dinner a try. Like the brunch, I discovered that Cafe 458 served great tasting food with a creative presentation. Like on the weekends, all proceeds (including tips) go to the Samaritan House. The combination of the food and the cause made my evening a wonderful experience there. This place has come a long way since I first started to come here. Pros: fantastic food, awesome idea more

Hooray for Samaritan House 1/18/2008

I learned about The Samaritan house when I went to a friend?s birthday brunch at Cafe 458, the weekend brunch part of The Samaritan house, and came back to volunteer as a server a couple of weeks later at Cafe 458. This is a hoppin place with a lot of activity. The Samaritan House has Cafe 458 during the week as an out reach to homeless men and women who are unable to work because of a disability. Cafe 458 provides a daily lunch, job readiness training, addiction counseling, help finding benefits and medical care, and case management. The Samaritan House also has the EDGE (earning dignity, gaining employment). It is a employment readiness programs that provides training classes, addiction counseling, case management, storage, showers, breakfast, and job placement. They are always looking for volunteers and donors. It?s a place that doesn?t want to perpetuate homelessness, they work to get people off the street, which is a worthy goal. more
