Love the Place 3/11/2010

We have been entertaining at Callaway's for many years and out of all the facilities that we visit, they provide the excellent atmosphere for events. I think some people may get confused by what the Callaway's banquet center is and what "The Pub" is. When you have an event, you get some of the top food and service in Sioux Falls! The Staff is friendly and easy to work with. The room has such a great atmosphere of elegance as well. If you are looking for a reception hall for an event, it's a great choice! Pros: People, Service, Food! more

Ridiculous service! 1/31/2009

Okay, I'll be honest here. This is the first time I've posted a review for a restaurant EVER. But my dinner experience tonight (just came back from the restaurant) was SO bad that I feel obligated to warn others out there. First off, the service was terrible. The server did not provide enough menus (those of who came late had to share with those who came earlier), had us pass down our drinks (ours was a table of 8) and pour our own water. She never came by to ask if the food was OK or if we needed anything. She only came by to ask if we needed any beers even before we were done. And even before we asked for the check, she brought the checks out for all the couples in the table. And then we knew why the service was so bad: Because the gratuity was a set amount because we were in a group. So she didn't really care about our needs, just as long as we kept ordering more so that her tip total would increase. Second (and worse) was that we found a short (1cm) curly hair in our Potted Chicken Pie, which we spotted only at the end of the meal (at first we thought it was a cracked portion of the plate, but by golly, that thing moved!). So, we mentioned it to our server, who only apologized. We paid for it (no offer of a refund, and we didn't want to press the issue to ruin the night with the group), but before we left the restaurant, I went to the counter and asked for the manager. When I reiterated that finding a curly piece of hair (nose/mustache hair?!) should not happen at a place like this, he said that he would "look into it". Even worse, there was no apology. Long story short, good ambience, so-so food (the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich was horrendous, while the Potted Chicken Pie was good until we saw the curly hair), and bad bad BAD service. First and last visit to this place. p.s. I know others may see/experience things differently here, but I'm just being honest about me and my fiancee's experience tonight. Pros: Ambience Cons: Terrible service, NOSE HAIR IN FOOD!! more

Rude service 4/24/2008

On April 23 four of my friends and myself met at CJ Calloways after work for drinks and supper. Immediately after the first two arrived they sense an irritation in the waiter. They tried to talk to him, joking a bit and got a sharp rely with a glare back from him. Shortly after that a third person joined the table and soon after that he took their food orders. When I arrived I had to wait for some time for him to return to the table to take my order - which was done with nothing but - did you want something? One of the gals did not get her french fries when he brought the food out and when she mentioned it he seemed quite surprised. He returned after awhile stating that the french fries would be coming shortly. At that time we all needed our drinks refreshed but he hurried away without asking if we wanted another drink. Finally we got up and went to the bar and ordered our own drinks. Sometime later he did return to remove some empty plates and we mentioned that the french fries had not arrived and he seemed quite put out by this. He was then told since she was completely done with her sandwich that she no longer wanted the fries. Again he did not ask if we wanted or needed anything else. Finally he just came back and asked if we were ready for our bills. We weren't - but we could tell he was so irritated that we weren't about to order any more from him. We realize that the place was very busy that evening - and would have understood completely - but the rudeness we received was uncalled for. That plus the fact that not far from us was a table of three gals - quite a bit younger that us 50-60 year olds that received at great amount of service. He even stopped to talk, joke, etc. Which is part of customer service but it should be the same for all customers - not just selective ones. The food was good as it always is - but have to say the service was the very poor. Pros: poor servce Cons: good food, nice place more

Sunday brunch is great! 12/21/2004

CJ Callaway's has the best Sunday brunch ever and it seems like there's never a crowd there which is even better. They have a buffet of eggs, sausage, potatoes, biscuits & gravy, waffles, fresh fruit, prime rib or ham and make your own omelets. It's great. And not too expensive either. I highly recommend it!! Pros: Great food, Ambiance more

Sioux Falls best kept secret 7/23/2002

One of the best places to go for a romantic get away. Your date will be swept off her feet when you drive up to Calloways on a starry night. She will feel like a princess arriving at the castle. The atmosphere glows with warmth and invites you to sit back and relax in the lightly lit restaurant, which will melt her heart as she sips on a glass of wine and gazes over the beautiful landscape that surround the restaurant, overlooking the hills of the adjacent golf course. The food is delicious, served graciously with care and love. If you don't melt her heart, the food and atmosphere will. It is definitely Sioux Falls best kept secret and now YOU know it so you have no reason not to check it out. Tip - go when the moon is full for an extra touch of romance! Pros: atmosphere, service, food Cons: consistency, spendy, golfers more
