Gallery Vibe
The BYU Museum of Art made headlines a few years ago when it refused to display Rodin's "The Kiss" as part of an exhibit of the renowned sculptor's work. However, the art that does pass censor scrutiny is well worth a short afternoon's visit to this modern and comfortable space.
The building, designed by Los Angeles architect James Langerheim, houses ten exhibition galleries, a library, auditorium, gift store and café. The sophisticated lighting design is the contribution of LeMar Terry and Stuart Silver, former directors of lighting and design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Exhibits
The museum's permanent collection includes more than 16,000 pieces. The extensive selection of western art includes paintings by Maynard Dixon and works by bronze artist Mahonri M. Young. Also watch for traveling exhibitions which show up every few years. Past highlights have included "The Etruscans," "Masada and the Dead Sea Scrolls" and the spectacular "Imperial Tombs of China."
