THE BAR IS MUCH BETTER THAN MOST IN AUSTIN BUT IT STILL LACJS THE FRILLS THAT WOULD ATTRACT MORE MONEY CUSTOMERS. IT SIMPLY NEEDS CHARACTER. Pros: UPSCALE Cons: ATMOSPHERE

Brown is Good, Even if the Color is Ugly 4/2/2006

A friend suggested me meet at a bar a little off the beaten Sixth street path one night. That bar was The Brown Bar. It is a pretty strange name for a place that is not overly brown in color or in any other real fashion, but it is still a pretty catchy name. The decor is classy, nothing kitschy here, nothing over the top, just good and classy. The drinks are good and strong, the servers are good and cute. This is a great place to take a close friend and have a sit down drink or go there to make a new friend. Weekends are the best to drop by this hot spot and grab a great drink off the strip. more

  • This street-level lounge in the refurbished downtown Brown Building condo complex is known to typically house politicos, lobbyists and successful, single, 30-something professionals during business hours. The Turkish marble bar top, glowingly lit from underneath, is the fixture of the otherwise darkened room. The bar also serves as a waiting room adjunct for the adjoining Gumbo's restaurant. The creative, yet pricey, full bar offers everything from single malt scotch to specialty martinis like a Key Lime Pie with Absolut Vanilia, lime and pineapple juice.
