I live just down the street from Brewed and I love it. It's a great place to meet friends, and it's always crowded and noisy. If you want a more intimate atmosphere, I'd suggest...

brewed awakening 4/9/2006

pretty good cafe on Northside. nice place to get some coffee or hot chocolate. It is also a good meeting spot if you want to set up something with people, like for projects or a quick conversation. lots of outlets to plug your laptops in if you want to get some work done, though I think that with the number of people around it might be hard to work for any extended period of time. Overall, decent place for coffee. more

Great Northside Cafe 3/21/2006

I prefer the cafes on the southside of Berkeley, but if I'm stuck on Northside, I love going to Brewed Awakening. There isn't that much to eat, but the coffee's good and there's usually seating available. There's plenty of outlets so you can plug in your laptop. The only down side is that it closes around 10 unlike the southside cafes which are opened til like 12 or 1. Great place to meet up with someone to chat, but not really a place for late night studying. more
