From the street, it looks like this is a New Age bookstore/giftshop. So I went in. There are books, teas (of course), candles, and lots of great last-minute gifts. My friend and I ordered our tea selections from the register, got heavy pots of tea and tea cups on a tray to take outside....and then lo and behold, like a mirage of a cool green oasis in a sun-parched desert, the back area opened up to us. Rattan furniture (sofas, chaises) sat on a wooden deck, leading to a quiet courtyard with bamboo rustling in the wind. It was truly astonishing to find this just steps from super-trendy Melrose, with the chaos that is Urtth Cafe two blocks away.
As we sat there sipping our teas and taking in the quiet, zen-like garden and beautiful landscaping, our worries just melted away. I don't even know how long we sat there, but no one gave us ugly looks or made us feel bad in any way. It was a magical place, just right to stumble upon and appreciate - and if you need a break from your life or the hectic city, make this your destination.
Pros: A serene bamboo oasis to contemplate life, or relax with friends.
Cons: Ordering the tea was confusing - but the staff was very helpful and courteous.
