I recently lost my dad. My mom and I went in this store to look for a specific book.\r When we walked in the door the lady ( appeared to be the owner) was very rude. She didn't...

Editorial review from Citysearch 12/8/2013

Spent a very pleasant Friday afternoon at this sweet little shop. It is such a great shop and the staff is so helpful. I have been a customer for years and it always warms my heart that we have this kind of book store available. I came away with two bags of books! Love the store, the staff and those precious dogs. Monroe should be proud of this business for sure. more

This is THE store for used books, great suggestions and conversation. The owner is amazingly kind, the house dog(s) are lovely. I was thrilled to see them expand into another room and will be a loyal customer as long as she's there!!! P.S. krissy3 from 2006 - your review could not be further from the truth based on my many many experiences. I urge you to reconsider because you are missing out! more

New Favorite Book Shop 8/5/2010

At first glance the store is overwhelming, but after a few minutes the chaos begins to make sense. My 16 yr old daughter and I spent a couple of hours browsing and buying. The store was very crowded, but we we always had someone to help us if we had a question. \r \r The trade for the paperbacks we brought in was more than we expected and there is a balance left for our next visit. We had two bags of paperbacks and our trade was almost $20. The bags were not full...but I can't recall how many books we brought in. The Book Lady requires that you pay 20% of your purchase before applying your trade amount....which is more than fair. My daughter found several books and our share was only $2.85 and we still have $9 on our trade.....which does not expire.\r \r The free coffee was good and the dogs and people were friendly and there is no musty book smell. The store has a fun atmosphere. We will return often...even when we don't have books to trade. The bargain of the day was a 1945 edi more

Love this little store! 4/9/2010

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this little bookstore. I love that you can turn in books for credit, that she has TONS of inventory and the prices are unbeatable. Even brand-spanking new paperbacks are usually $3.50! Half the cost of B&N or other big name stores. You can truly spend hours browsing in here. It's almost like a step back in time also. No bright lights or overdone artwork. No retail prices or over-the-top signage. Just a simple little nook for book lovers. Pros: Tons of books, clearly sectioned, fantastic prices Cons: Kind of out of the way for Charlotte-dwellers more

Love The Book Lady 3/16/2010

Cozy little store packed with used books. Comfortable place to get lost in. I could spend hours brousing the shelves. I have a stock pile of old books that I never knew what to do with. Everytime I go, I bring a box of books and she will take most for a trade in and put the value on your account. I never can leave without a hand full of books every time. Pros: Great feel, Trade used books, Great selection, great prices Cons: none that i can think of more

what a wonderful find!! There's a wonderful children's section... my kids love to go and pick out a book, while I am wandering around looking at the WONDERFUL selection of other books. if you are wanting a book, definitely check out The Book Lady, before you go pay full price anywhere else!! more

LOVE STORE-LOVE OWNER-LOVE PUPPY! 2/12/2009

This store is so important to me as an avid reader and, personally, I thank Cathy for her dedication to the comfort of her customers. I ONLY WISH SHE WERE CLOSER TO ME...... IN CHARLOTTE...I WOULD BE THERE EVERY DAY! THANK YOU CATHY AND JOSIE! ROCK ON! Pros: BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS Cons: PARKING more

It's not books-a-million, people! That's the point! 12/7/2008

\r Great selection, liberal trade-in policy, awesome owner. There is a great religion section, and books are well-organized into categories. \r \r I don't see how anyone can expect the store owner to have her entire inventory memorized. No there's no computerized system, but it's a welcoming bookstore, and a delight to browse. Prices are low, and the children's section is large and in the back with a couch and stuffed animals.\r \r These are the bookstores we should encourage with our $$. \r \r Vive la Book Lady! more

So much fun... for everyone! 8/23/2008

I love the Book Lady, the store, and the ""lady"" herself! I've been going there for years and it is always a great experience. It's usually the highlight of our shopping day. I was shocked when I read that others didn't have a good experience. She's always been friendly to me and my children. She has doughnut holes, water, toys, stuffed animals, ect. which, to me, speaks ""kid friendly."" No, she doesn't have a computerized system with all the books listed, but that's part of the fun. If you don't have time to plunder around some, then come back when you do have time. It's not hopeless. She does have a system. One more good thing about the Book Lady is that she gives a discount to home-schoolers. Try it... I promise you try it again.\r Pros: lots of books, stuff to occupy your children while you look Cons: not many more

We love the selection 8/10/2008

Whenever we travel thru to SC from Charlotte, we ALWAYS stop in at the Book Lady. Yes these books are used and you will not find every book you want but they have a huge selection and affordable prices. My kids love the store because they can go in and sit at the Children's section. They are surrounded with popular stuffed animals and books about anything and everything. We have never walked out of this store empty handed. The only downside is the owner does not buy books year round and she is not open on Monday and Tuesdays. We have traveled thru there on those days before and when the kids found out she wasn't opened they cried. I have never had a poblem with the owner unlike some of the other post so please go and check it out for yourself. more

Great find 7/2/2008

I love to read and was spending a fortune on the books a million website. I had a friend tell me about this little store. Wish I'd known sooner, could have saved a bunch a money. And she buys them back, which works out great. I take a whole bag in and come out with a new ones for very little money. If you go through books like water, this is the place for you! more

Great store with good ambiance 1/21/2008

This store is so much fun to browse and find treasures. They don't have every book but the fun is finding a treasure in the ones they have. The bookstore consists of two suites of a small mall put together. Nice subdued lighting, chairs to sit in, free coffee and tea make it into a great experience while you are looking. \r Vanessa Roesler more

Lots of books--not the best customer service.... 1/20/2008

The Book Lady is an interesting little store, and it's definitely fun to look through the stacks, but the owner does NOT like having children in the store and will make that very plain, so don't take your kids. She only accepts checks and cash, which is fine, but will be very annoyed if you ask if she takes cards. As long as you can get past the eccentric owner, you might like it! Pros: lots of books, some hard to find Cons: not kid friendly, only takes cash or check more

Yes, the Book Lady has it! 11/11/2006

Book Lady is a very comprehensive resource for books of all types: kids, fiction, literature, travel, business - you name it. And even better the owner is one of the nicest shop keepers I know. She buys back, buys older books, buys almost anything that you can read and sells the ones she has for next to nothing. I love it. Pros: Tons of books, great owner, low prices Cons: parking can be a problem, and the store may not have the ""one"" book you're looking for more

not really friendly 6/14/2006

I recently lost my dad. My mom and I went in this store to look for a specific book.\r When we walked in the door the lady ( appeared to be the owner) was very rude. She didn't know what she had in the store nor was anything organized. I am a definately "" fun"" person and sometimes enjoy going through "" stacks"" but the least she should know is whether or not she had it. It was disorganized chaos. She didn't even offer to help, she just waived us mumbling something. As an avid reader I could have been a loyal customer, I guess she doesn't need the business. I will not go back nor recommend to my friends who are also avid readers. Pros: there are books Cons: poor customer service, poor attitude and poor store layout more

Great little bookstore 11/6/2005

Has a wide variety of books. Kind of a hard to find store but it is worth it once you get there. Had a good variety of used books. Found a lot of oldies but goodies that are hard to find, or horribly expensive at the major chains. PROS: Cheap and a wide variety CONS: Hard to find more

An Independent 6/8/2005

Owned by a nice little lady who loves her books - she also buys used books but they have to be in good condition. Located on Independence Blvd going in to Monroe. Is actually pretty big for a bookstore out that way, and she offers free donut holes on a little table in the front of the store. Nice place to escape to. more
