Black Oak Books

I love this bookstore. If you are worried about the "higher" prices, consider the fact that these books are used - any price will be cheaper than you would have paid new! They do have a very wonderful children's section, and it's divided by new versus used, by ages, and by fiction versus nonfiction - and dominated by a table in the middle that always has incredible kids' books all over it. I saw a boxed set of Little House books here for less than $20 - try that at a regular bookstore! I don't get a lot out of the literature/sci-fantasy sections, but the non-fiction is unparalleled. They have everything - I rarely make it all the way to the back because the front fascinates me so, but I dimly remember all kinds of sociology, history, biography, language, drama, and art stuff. The front area has Deaf studies, books on etiquette, a great selection of cookbooks and (my favorite) food-lovers' lit, great political books, psychology, self-help, and on and on. It's one of those places where it is very hard for me not to spend money, even when I come in determined to hold back! more

I've only been there once, cause it was enough for me. First of all, their prices are way too high, but that's probably because they carry a lot of older out of print stuff, and particularly anything that is actually worth some money as an antique. They do have some newer more reasonably priced books, but overall I wasn't impressed. Unless you're in the area or are looking to build a library out of ancient hardbacks, don't bother. more

Convenient location for university students. A very comfortable store that offers a wide selection of books, from scientific journals to mangas. I enjoy standing against their wall and just reading through books. Although the prices seem to be a bit more expensive, they are willing to match the prices of competitors. more

This independent book store offers a huge selection of new, used and antique books. If you're looking to recycle old books you already own, bring them here in exchange for cash or trade. The highlights of this store are the fabulous children's room and the frequent and diverse public readings. The children's corner offers a wide and high quality selection as well as a cozy environment to sit and read to your children. Pick up the monthly calendar to see which authors are reading in either this Berkeley location or the sister store in North Beach (San Francisco). The enthusiastic staff is very knowledgeable.
