I've been buying Birkenstocks since before they were what the cool people wore. I wore birkenstocks when people would accuse me of being a vegetarian instead of asking out of respect (I'm not, by the way!)
This is the place, in Portland, where the Birkenstock cobbling began. It's the orginal place to buy barge cement and at one time the only place to get your shoes retread. It's still the only place in my mind. It's lodged in a funky little hole in the wall near the downtown library where the white collar crowd can steal away on lunch to pick up their weekend shods. Prices are about the same for Birkies anywhere...but the difference is that the cobblers here really value their shoes and their customers.
