Biltmore Estate

Overview
Once owned by George Vanderbilt, this historical house boasts 250 rooms stretching up three stories. Highlights include artwork by Renoir, furniture by Chippendale, a library with 24,000 books and a chess set that belonged to Napoleon. Close your eyes and you can envision Henry James or Edith Wharton dining in the expansive breakfast room. Also on the 8,000-acre estate: spectacular gardens, an expansive winery, multiple restaurants and opportunities for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

The Experience
There's much to explore--easily a full-day adventure--but the house is the crown jewel of the estate. Guided tours are available (at an extra cost), but the self-guided option, with or without audio, allows you to linger where you please. The basement, which can feel a bit claustrophobic, is a must-see; narrow hallways lead to pantries and service areas, a bowling alley, pool and a gym with antiquated (though once state-of-the-art) equipment.
