Big John's Moving, Inc.

Beware! I used Big John's twice in the past and was quite happy with them, but recently received an estimate from them that was 33% higher than 1 year ago for moving the exact same amount of stuff and for a shorter distance. The estimator was extremely rude and abrasive towards me. I had to call them 6 times to get a return call after the estimate at which time I spoke with Big John himself only to have him defend his estimator and estimate and basically tell me he didn't need or want my business. Very arrogant and cocky. more

Excellent movers. I've moved many more times than anyone should have to in the last 12 years, and I've been dissatisfied (to put it kindly) with every single moving company I've used. Except for Big John's. Before our move from Manhattan to Philadelphia, they sent an estimator to our apartment, free of charge. He was quick and thorough, and gave us a detailed binding estimate, in writing, before he left. One of the things I hate most about moving, and moving companies, is the obnoxious game of springing surprise charges on you once they have your entire life in their truck. There is none of that with Big John's. They give you a binding estimate, and they stick to it. They did charge me an extra $200 for boxes (boxes are always priced ridiculously when you get them from moving companies), BUT I was warned in advance that this might happen if I were to add anything not covered in the estimate - and I did. So no complaints. As far as the actual move went, a team of five very courteous and clearly experienced men showed up precisely on time and began working immediately in an impressively efficient, speedy, conscientious manner. Anything I had not already packed was packed with care and respect, and no one asked me for a penny until the entire move had been completed (this is probably not standard practice, but they beat me to my destination). Plus, they moved us during a snow storm! I would recommend this company very highly. They are a bit more expensive than most movers up front. However, in the end they actually charged less to move me from NY to Philly than most movers have cost me to move from NJ to NY or even NY to NY. This is because they do not bs you with hidden charges or other traps. They give you an estimate, and they stick to it unless YOU change something. Outstanding. I would use them again. more

The best thing about these guys is they moved my stuff from NYC to Texas themselves. They didn't contract out to some other company to get it done for them. The same guy who picked up and packed my stuff in Manahattan was there in Houston to move it in. There was a misunderstanding with my storage in between but when it came down to it, these guys showed they are different from the bait and switch moving company stereotype and made sure I was happy. I recently stopped in Big John's to pick up boxes and they were so helpful! I had no idea what types of boxes or the number of boxes I was going to need for my move, they guided me through the process and got me set up with everything that I was going to need for my move. I wished so bad that I heard about them beforehand so they could have completed my move! Next time! Pros: Extremly organized and helpful! more

I hate moving more than anything. I called at least 20 movers to get estimates. I booked a less expensive mover who I had a problem with 2 days before my move and called Big Johns in a panic to help me out. They took my reservation without a deposit, on good faith, and showed up at exactly 9am. They got my belongings out my 4th floor walk-up apartment with such ease...don't think any item touched a wall. The crew worked like clockwork. For a stress-free move, go with Big Johns...it was well worth it! Pros: on time, flexible, accommodating, professional Cons: none! more

I was quoted one rate...they charged me another.....they over charged me by a lot, but if you refuse to pay them, they have your furnishings. They use excess materials so they can charge you more. moving in NYC is tough but you should be able to find better movers than these. more

They will show up and get the job done, at a cost of time and money. Put your frustrations aside - there really aren't any 'great' movers in NYC - and just be glad you are in the process already. Make sure you visit the ATM beforehand and take out a few hundred more than you think you need and you'll be fine more
