Super-Casual North Highland Eatery a Neighborhood Staple 1/28/2010

The casual ""General Store"" vibe is perfect for ambiance but lacks in practicality. However, the restaurant portion of the store delivers with hot dishes like warm, fluffy bagels topped with lox, cream cheese and capers or paninis oozing with mozzarella, tomato, and basil. Other deli offerings like roast beef sandwiches or cold dishes like potato salad or hummus are also doled out in brown bags. The food is easy to grab and run, or to stay and eat on rustic, wooden community tables. Italian lemonade sodas and bottled Coca Cola are found in the refrigerated case, though scalding hot coffee is available behind the counter. The line to order feels like it creeps by slower than a caterpillar, but if you have the patience, it can be worth the wait. Pros: Great bagels, sandwiches, and fresh coffee. Cons: Slow service, a bit pricey, irrelevant ""general store"" more

Great Bagels, but service is sorely lacking 10/1/2009

I would have given Belly five stars, but the service is so poor! The bagels are wonderful (though they are quite different from New York City bagels), and the coffee is excellent (they serve Batdorf & Bronson coffee, a local Atlantan coffee roaster), but the service is slow and the employees are not very helpful. The sign inside clearly reads that bagels are served all day, but I have taken the trip there on several occassions around 11 am when I've been told that the bagels have sold out (???). The worst part about it is that the employees aren't even apologetic about it, they could care less. On the rare occassion that you can enjoy a bagel and a coffee on a weekend day (and find a seat!) Belly is definitely worth a shot. Pros: Bagels Cons: Service more

Why is this here 9/16/2009

I truly don't understand the listing on some of the hot spots, but to each their own. I see there is a much more realistic view here from the actual customers versus the advertisers Pros: location Cons: food, cleanliness more

Objective Observance... 1/3/2009

Belly is a great little atmospheric place in the highlands. When it's raining outside, it's a nice and sunny place inside. They provide delicious sandwiches, salads at a reasonable price, including baked goods, empanadas, bagels and delicious coffee too. However, if all you want is a cup of coffee, it can be quite irritating when you've got Suzie Indecision in front of you wanting to know how much everything from muffins to bagels cost when it is clearly on the chalk board menu right in front of her face....or when Holly Housewife and Dennis Dogood want to sample every damn thing in the chef's case. All I want is a cup of coffee people. Can SOMEONE please step aside so I can pay my $2 and be on my merry way? Another thing....I went for a refill one day, something I rarely do, because usually one cup is enough, however on this particular day, a second cup was called for. So I go up to the counter with roughly 50 cents in dimes, nickels and pennies and the charge for a refill is $1.35??!?!?!?!?!? WTF? A REFILL people is supposed to be much less to encourage people to stay in your establishment and to reuse their cups. What a ripoff. more

Sadly, it's really gone downhill.... 12/14/2008

I used to love going to Belly but now something's happened and it has really gone downhill. Their bagels are still good (thought they are left out uncovered) but the rest of the food does seem like it's been left out to long, has flies hovering around, and is sorely lacking in taste. Last time I went I watched someone drop a customer's food on the ground (wrapped, but not well wrapped) and just pick it up and place it back in their bag... Also, the wonderful doo-dads, jams, and toys are all gone. Looks sparse and like a shell of it's former self. So sad! Pros: ... Cons: unappetizing, possible contaminated food more

Wish it was better! 11/6/2008

After finding a large fly in my salad I stopped getting food here awhile ago. Occasionally, I will go by and get cupcakes only to find them very very dry every time. Items are way to expensive! more

Disappointing...... 10/30/2008

I totally have to agree with the previous reviewer. I expected this to be a great place based on the other reviews and walked in only to find flies on the cupcakes and quiche....no joke. The front door was wide open as it was a nice day and flies were buzzing around all over. The staff had to notice since the quiche was uncovered right near the register. Is a glass cover too much to ask for or even saran wrap? Gross.....I walked out empty handed. more

Flies on cupcakes and more 9/12/2008

I do not get this place. Atlanta is so full of those trying to tie so called fame to a food business, and please this is not NYC, so avoid the tired 80's attitude.. Belly is just a so, so coffee spot on a high end corner, but so not high end. more

Woo-hoo for Belly!!! 9/4/2008

Whether you're a fan of breakfast or lunch, Belly is sure to please! The olive oil bagels, made daily, are delicious. The made-to-order breakfast wraps (my favorite is the egg, cheese, house-made mole' and avocado) and sandwiches are filled with fresh, quality ingredients. The organic coffee - steaming hot or iced - is always excellent. And if you're looking for ""just a little something,"" try one of the empanadas. I don't know why but they are magical! Each of them - chicken, beef, potato, or egg & cheese - are simple but spiced just right, and are served with freshly made chunky salsa. Treat yourself to Belly! Pros: Always fresh, quality food and beverages more

Great food, comfortable atmosphere and free WiFi 9/3/2008

I love going to Belly for the amazing food. Every time I go I find something new there to try out. I must admit that I'm partial to the bagels, sandwiches, cookies and of course the cream puffs are to die for. Hanging out at Belly is always great because the people there are so friendly and make you feel at home. And now that they have free WiFi it's even more fun to join friends for lunch. Pros: Great food, great people, great service, great place more

Best used for breakfast 6/24/2006

I have a mixed review for Belly, having lived across the street from the would-be general store since its inception. For breakfast, Belly is simply wonderful, if limited. The bagel sandwiches (I am partial to the bacon, egg and cheese on a toasted sesame), are fabulous, and the cheese grits are some of the best that can be found in Atlanta (they use stone ground, automatically making them creamier and more textural than Aunt Jemima). Also great are the egg and cheese tortillas with mole. The coffee is excellent, and they squeeze the oj fresh to order. Pros: Great breakfast Cons: Poor lunch and baked goods more

don't bother - save your $$! 12/7/2005

Belly has REALLY gone down hill. For what they charge, you would think the food and service would be MUCH better. I went today - got a soup and pasta salad -- soup (mushroom and potato - why i ordered that, i don't know) was filled only half way in container and was bland. the pasta salad was given to me in a smaller container than the one i ordered and was so so...All of this was about $13! For a soup, salad and drink to go?? Normally, I really wouldn't mind paying this if the food and service was worth it. The gentleman behind the counter was slow in every sense of the word and could barely even work the cash register! I could understand if the guy was a new hire -- but poor counter service (and bland food!) has pretty much become the standard at Belly... Pros: lots of gourmet items, plenty of seating Cons: poor service, food is Inconsistent, prices more

a lot of potential 11/10/2005

This is a fun little place, with a nostalgic feel. The food is good and prices aren't too bad. However, it would be a lot nicer if they sold a few more packaged foods to give it more of a general store feel. Perhaps they could include some hard to find or regional specialties. more

Nostalgic Chic 3/13/2005

Besides looking oh-so-cute, Belly has great sandwiches, bagels and sweets. There's not much seating, but there are usually spots at the counter. The cupcakes are a treat! Plus it's fun to browse and look at the European chocolates and other fun gift items. more
