My gas furnace recently stopped working on a Sunday. My internet was down, so I was unfortunately unable to trouble shoot online . I called Bel-Red and spoke at length with the repair person, describing the problem in detail ( fan on continuously but no heat/flame). I asked if there was anything I could try first as there was a $250.00 "after hours" charge for him to come out on Sunday. He had no suggestions so I agreed to have him come over as it was the middle of December. He arrived and took one quick look and told me it needed a new ignitor but did not tell me what the new part would cost to install. He proceeded to install the part in less than two minutes. The ignitor is held in with one screw, one simple plug and is easily accesessible from the front of the furnace. The total cost was $653.00 for the visit. It took longer to write up the bill than do the repair!!! The charge for the ignitor was $350.00. When my internet was back up next day I checked the price for the part. It is $25.00 on Amazon.
On his way out the repairman said, "Yeah, thats what it usually is." It sounded like he knew what the problem was all along.
When I called Bel Red on Monday to ask for an explanation as to why it cost $655.00 for a $25.00 part and two minute repair I was told that this is just how it is.
Avoid these people unless you enjoy being taken advantage of.
